Foam in FT Kits

Hello
I am new to FT and just received my F-22 kit. The foam is new to me and seems incredibly soft and weak, without the backing. Is it normal to remove the backing for the build? The foam is not like EPO, Depron or EPP, all of which I have some experience with.
Thanks for your help.

The brown paper stays on. The paper backing is what gives the foam its strength, and it helps keep the airplane together when you fold it up. It's also water proof, so you won't have to worry about landing in a puddle or snow. If you crash it the foam with paper on is actually very resilient. It has the tendency to crumple instead of shatter like depron.
