J1 Trainer (Cub inspired)

After a successful winter I've not used my Cub much.

But now I think she'll see a lot more duty.

I had planned on using some of these big 100mm wheels for a WWII bomber but decided the Cub needed them more.

Compared to the 2.5" wheels these should provide an extra bit of clearance to land in the thicker grass.

They worked pretty well in the deep wet grass this morning.

The 2830-1000 was a little under powered in the high winds today.

But now I want to make a 60" winged version with a 480 motor or something like that.

This plane is great for winter flying so I won't mess with it.

The nose gave out on the last landing.
Old repair after the FPV hit and also after someone else flew it into a post.
I'd had some rubber bands from the landing gear to the front of the nose and that pulled it down.

I took the opportunity to switch over to my 9X which will allow me to program some mixes in now.
I'm going to stick with the 9x6 vs 10x6 prop for a little more punch and had a nice spinner sitting around.

So she's picked up a little weight but should still be fun to fly.

Wow, I am building a trainer for my girlfriend, it's not nearly as elaborate.... but this looks better. BTW Andre, is that trim road?
I just moved to ottawa from montreal and will be flying there, I think from your videos it's that spot.

Anyways keep it coming, may build a smaller 75% j1 cub next time

Thanks, there is nothing elaborate about this plane.

Basic 4 ch setup but it performs well.

I'd built it for my Son but felt it was too fast to start with.

Actually my Dad was complaining that his planes were to big for smaller field near his place.

So I ordered some 2S batteries and small motors.

He built this.

My next Cub is going to be a 60" monster :)

Yes I fly out of Millennium Park.

Yeah it was funny.

I was testing the wheels out in tall grass. I was all happy it worked and lifted off but on landing poof off the nose came.
At least it did not happen in air.

All joking aside. Over the winter this plane taught me landing control.
Really if I were to change things I'd make a bigger rudder.
Allowing me to use less ailerons on landing to alter the line up.

Big motor, prop and wheel tests

I decided to try and use the J1 "Cubby" to test out the 3536 motor, 12" prop and 5" wheels.

Clearly the air frame is too thin and worn out after a lot of fun.

On the last flight last night I heard a loud pop/crack sound.

Oops.

I'm going to mend the break and put the original wheel/power combo back on.

While the Storch will be a great plane the 48" Cub is perfect for those days where the weather is really poor and I want a simple plane to just enjoy.
