This week we have something a little different. No reviews, no events, no tips, just a small bet between friends. Is it possible to build a foam airplane, for under a hundred dollars, that can fly faster than a hundred miles an hour? Josh Bixler is sure that his wrinkled tape covered foam box with wings can succeed with speed. Josh Scott weighs the options and looks at the red flying brick with doubt. The challenge has been set, rules have been drafted, and the consequences have been decided. Who wins, who loses, and who will be looking a little different in the next episode? Watch and find out.

This is a great challenge, but you could get much more speed by using a balsa wood construction. I managed about 130 to 150mph for under $100, I used a balsa wood F15 with a heli motor pusher prop on the back, running on 2200mah 3 cell nano-tech. It pulled 55 amps and flew for about 3 minutes on full throttle. Great little toy, unfortunately it died when the elevator tor off (too fast I think). Plus the motors only lasted for 10 flights before they usually blew up or something like that

Love the show and the forum! Great work. I am an art director and can appreciate the graphic style, production value and look to the FlightTest brand. That along with great, useful and entertaining content, make it a very cool thing to be a part of.

I am building this Speed Wing and wanted to run by you the set up and hopefully you can let me know if I am on the right path.
Built the frame with fiberglass arrows running down the leading edge of the wing. Bamboo skewers around the back and along the joint of the fuse. 2200kv Grayson Hobby supersonic v2 motor/30 amp ESC. 6x4 prop and 1600mAh 3S. But I need help with the CG. Right now it is at 9 in. Back from the nose and your plans look like it should be between 4-6in. Do I just add a ton of weight to the front to get that CG up? It seems like a lot of weight. Almost like another battery of even more to get the CG that far up.

Please advise I would love to hear your thoughts.

You could get one to fly 0 mph ground speed, as in just hovering, which is pretty easy to get to in terms of ability. But your control ability is something completely different and in this I assumed that you can hover for very slow also torque.

Look at the Ghool video (latest one out) and look how slow and creepy that flies. Pretty darn slow I think.

Balsa construction can be lighter and more rigid. I have no doubt that I could exceed 100 mph with my Assassin combat wing, but it starts to flutter like crazy above a certain speed. Its really fun to do, though. I like to take it up a couple of hundred feet and nose down into a full power dive. About 1/2 way down, she starts to shake like a big girl in a mega earthquake. Sounds really cool, too!

The Assassin is good in it's stock configuration for about a 100
Any faster and you will want to get more creative with carbon fiber reinforcement
