13th Squadron Betty Bomber

Started cutting for the 13th Squadron Betty...using lots of leftover foamboard from the Me-262 SBK whenever possible. Dunno about where you live, but its getting tough to find DTFB around here, even with a Dollar Tree on every corner. Anyway, its a cool design with potential for removable cowlings to access motors/electronics, as well as a working bomb bay that drops a Okha. Lots of curves and nacelles on this one. Should be a fun build!

how do you cut out the super thin front nose curving pieces?

I only have an X-Acto knife for cutting. I start with a sharp blade and try to keep the knife almost upright & vertical to cut those tight curves on the skinniest part of the blade.

Attention Future Betty Builders!

Check the fit on the two engine nacelles before gluing. Unless I'm mistaken, I think the label is incorrect. In order to fit inside the formers, the cheeks need to sit on top of the base.

I’ll be following the build! I absolutely love the 13’th squadron planes, it was a treat to get to meet them and see all their beautiful planes at Flitefest this year.

Finished up the drop mechanism and cleaned it up a bit. It balanced for me with a 1300 3S battery and two ounces of lead in the nose. A better solution? There's a lot of space up front for to use a bigger battery, like a 2200.

The drop mechanism for the Okha bomb also passed bench testing today. It took a small 5g servo and a lot of fiddling to get it working. It seems to hold on pretty well- keep the brackets on the Okha pretty close together and it works better.

Its pretty big for a 13th Squadron plane. Most of their twins use an A pack...this one has uses an F, and it shows. I didn't put in the removable cowlings, but did build an extra bomb bay to augment the Okha version. It's going to stay unpainted for a while, but looks cool with the two foam colors. Go build one today!

The Black Widow is an easy flying plane, too. Mine died a premature death, but #2 will be better with less crinkles in the booms.

Finished painting on the Betty, so here are her glamour shots before she gets all beat up. It may be a while until maiden, as there's a bunch of snow and its yucky outside. I'll try and get some video of the Okha launch when I do get a chance to fly it. Happy building, everyone.
