Wake up! Time to fly!
NOOO!!!!! Not our fearless leader!!!! Whatever will we do while you are gone?

Someone hit the fridge.. Ill raid the build room, someone else can rifle thru his dainties and mix them all up. Then we can all crazy glue his furniture to the ceiling!!.

Enjoy to vacation mate. Make sure you get some flight time in and get some video of new and exciting places for when you get back.

You must be a hoot at parties.;)

So, I found this post late, really late. Are you planning on hosting any other events? I would love to participate in (almost) anything airplane related. I could even help coordinate another event. I think I am pushing in a wrong direction. Anyways hope to see this all in action this next FF event. Happy flying! ;)

You have time to register and build your plane before the judging on December 31st. Join in and have some fun.

Jeeze, this looks like fun! being a huge fan of flying wings, I might have to bite and try a Ho-229! I have a decent understanding of flying wings, but no scratch building experience, so this would be a challenge, but a welcome one. I also have no idea if I can make it to Flite Fest 2018, to be quite honest.

Cool, start a thread and go for it. Just join in and have some fun.

Well, I'm back and trying to figure out how to get the furniture off the ceiling without tearing up the velvet. Thanks Psyborg

ItMightFly and PostiveAnion - come on in, the water's fine! We are typically a really helpful bunch around these parts, and when we aren't being helpful we are at least entertaining.... or... umm.... at least we are entertaining ourselves. :p

When you've picked a plane to work on, just post here with a link to the build thread and I'll get you added to the official roster. Then get to designing and building! :)

I'm closing in on Testing my Kalinin K-12 and I think I will throw my Hand in the SAM-7 for Escort Fighters to go with the my K-12.

I would LOVE if someone would be willing to try THIS Russian amphibious craft LPL Ushakov - the flying submarine:

LPLFlyingSubBoxArt.jpg

This strikes me as something the Peter Sripol's of the world would tackle.

Well beyond my Capacities right now, but I'm thinking 3d printed with waterproofing and folding props for underwater efficiency.

For those looking for other Russian/Soviet X-planes, look through this book here for ideas!

It's where nearly all the pictures I've seen around have com from, Hope it helps someone :)

Yeah, this is a very cool plane. Would love to see someone tackle it. It was very high on my design list this year, but I decided to go for a canard style aircraft instead and hold off on this bad boy until we have a water planes challenge. :)

Now the real challenge would be adding ballast tanks to make it submersible!

That is the only way to do it!

Why build the LPL Flying Submarine If it isn't submersible or, have working torpedoes? (read 3.3V button stack with a Whoop motor)

Now, How do Submarines ballast work again? :D

This challenge also needs to include some working "exploding" Boats. Boats with breakaway sections - for torpedo hits which activate fans blowing out faux fires out the side it hit. like a halloween fake cauldron fire, or fake torch

It only makes sense - I have seen at least 6 Soviet water planes with torpedoes mounted. I'm sure each major force in WWII had a couple... I mean what are we waiting for FTF?! Sounds like the next set of FTF Challenges to me...

Modified fish tank air pump, mini ball valves and two of the round "Reservoirs" from a pc liquid cooling system ought to get the job done fairly reasonably.

Or you could modify a few turkey basters (huge syringes) with continuous turn servos a threaded rod to push and pull water in and out.

Pump Power

Like this one? (opened up) 61wGSfRlliL._SL1450_.jpg I'm trying to understand if most of this is a step-down transformer or not. to see if this could be hooked directly to a lipo or 12v regulator.

Forget the fancy reservoir system and attach the air pump hose to a balloon nested in the wing sections and the tail, to push the water out, with a drain hole for boating/flying modes.

I need a great deal more skill, but if done up, this would be truly amazing! Stupid Forum  :p

Air-Pump: Looking at it the Transformer looks to induce a magnetic field to push/pull the magnet on the arm alternately, spinning the compressor, and pushing air down the tube. Maybe fitted with a smaller motor to spin it? Sounds worth exploring.

Great idea but building it out of FB would be difficult because the FB itself is lighter than water whereas the original was built out of AL and steel was definitely heavier than water. If I remember it correctly a gallon of water weighs 10 pounds. I suspect that the volume of FB would be in the vicinity of 1 gallon or more displacement and therefore for a displacement of 1 gallon the aircraft "Bare" would need to weigh in at greater than 10 pounds if it is to be able to submerge. A very Heavy aircraft indeed. Scaling the plane up would due to the FB material require greater weight.

Ballast tanks work on increasing the buoyancy and therefore allowing the heavy submarine reach negative buoyancy to rise to the surface. When filled with water a submarine will sink but a FB plane will float!

Just a thought!

Have fun!
