I built a cnc router that works great for cutting pretty much anything but steel. You can add pen holders for plotting/drawing, and laser for for cutting/etching. I completely agree that laser cutting fb melts the foam a bit and I prefer the router for that.

Yes. I use a .8 mm down-cut bit. Works great. I cut full depth at 2500 to 3500 mm/min. I can cut at 4000+ but I only do that for very basic non-plane stuff.
