My motto is I design things that don't exist. This foamy is 14 years old and I claim zero feet takeoff due to the definition of when a STOL plane lifts off the ground.
If you look at the setup of the F-22, after "mucho" trimming and balancing, I got this animal tamed and flying. It has to be perfect on the CG on all 3 axis and I figured out how to get in the right mindset that left rudder is the "UP" and right rudder is "DOWN" . Now the left stick has throttle and rudder to control height!!! as well as elevator.
Sorry, no rudder. But it give you many combinations to maintain same conditions.
This is what I wanted to do at the club field.
So after sketching and thinking, this is what I came up with. The normal EDF looks like this.
Since I used the vector method to solve problems and explored lot of high alpha, notice I mounted the EDF on a servo on the other side and the top of a stripped servo cover on this side for pivot points so it is right at CG. That way, the EDF is rotating around the CG point at all times. All thrust is forward.
Above, this is left rudder on transmitter. Now the thrust from the EDF (say 30 degrees) is broken up to 1/2 total directed upwards and .866 thrust is directed forward. Got the idea.
What happens when the transmitter rudder is moved to the right? It now forces the thrust forward and under the fuse and allows vectoring.
SO, when flying you pull up elevator and have right rudder deflected and tweak the throttle and right rudder, elevator, add some income wind, you can wind soar with practice. Added rudders(pot controlled, not transmitter ) latter for crosswinds on landing. So now the total flight environment is enlarged.
Last thing, I had visions of working is my air cushion idea. You wait for snow to use yours, Litterbug, I want grass.
This is the bottom of my F-22.
Put left rudder in and hold, add some throttle and start tweaking both, the F-22 will lift off the ground and float on the grass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, some of the air is trapped lifting up the F-22.
Until you exceed grass resistance, it doesn't move, but is now off the ground. So, it makes sense that I can claim the shortest distance for takeoff. Round about an inch. Above pic, I had to hack the inner structure of the F-22 to get level and prevent tipping and touching the ground. Spot landings took some practice with rudder, but with three variables, it becomes normal for spot landings.
Here is the video of the maiden flight and I was very happy. Just love the soft landings as the air gets trapped underneath. I did chicken out(no way I'm going to rebuild it) on that fast high landing. I did practiced about 10 ft above and gave myself a 90% chance of replicating it, but you know yourself "there are days" and "there are days". Intend to fly it this fall.
Second time in video, I tried less of angle on EDF to see what happens.
Did the above reading of left, right rudder screw your up thinking when it means up/down rather than left,right?
