Hey all, its been a while since i posted here in good ol' FT Forum.

Well I am back with a new and exciting project, with a brand new Peopoly Phenom on my soon to purchase list ( just waiting on the funds/$tsla stock). I have begun work on my latest project over on my YouTube channel. (insert shamless plug here )

I just recently finished working on a CYBER BIKE concept and with my new printer right around the corner I was looking for a new project, I wanted to get back to me biggest passion, model aviation. So with BIG kick@$$ printer in my tool set, what should I make? I wanted something awesome, of course, but something fun and easy to fly. I'd get bored of a trainer style aircraft way too fast to justify the cost and effort, but I have a naughty passion for bush planes. They can perform like a Trainer and they can by lots of fun flying low and slow.

So there i was thinking of what kind of STOL monster I wanna make, AND BAM! It hits me, that crazy American with that crazier Wilga, and thats how it all started.

Specs: (some design parameters are still being decided.

  • 2500mm-ish WS
  • Resin printed everything except any carbon spars, rods, tubes and other "not printable components"
  • 20inch functional variable pitch prop, yes I am making a VP from resin printed parts, yes I have done the math and the stress analysis to validate this choice
  • Super accurate detail, down the the bloody rivets where ever possible
  • Resin: Siraya Tech Blu
  • All the lights! all of them....
  • Working gas compression shocks for the landing gear

more specs to come

So its still SUPER early days for this project at the moment and i have been a bit out of touch with the RC aviation community, so im jumping back in with a fun project and would love for you all to follow along. My knowledge of new hobby parts is "new guy on the block" level at the moments so i would love for any advice on choosing the right parts like motors, servos, Tx/Rx, and the important one batteries. Please check out episode 01 where I go over the parts I have on hand and go over some more details about the project. I also post regularly over on my Twitter so feel free to follow me there too.

Thank you all, I will post updates here as often as I can. Latest update 15/01/2021

@Chaos 23 that is AWESOME. Thanks for laying out everything out for us. Also I will definitely be following your progress.

What type of material do you plan on using ?
not yet decided, I would like to use Siraya Tech Blu but i live in Australia, so i can only get the 1kg bottle. I am open to using other high strength resins but i will be heavily weighing cost over performance. considering the size of the aircraft ill be printing, the mass/volume ration is in my favor for keeping the air frame weight down, but its still a lot of volume. I will be contacting My peopoly to see if they can do a bundle on shipping since they also supply Siraya Tech resin, as it stands shipping for my phenom is going to be $500usd on its own lol thats a 1/3 of the price of the printer. so my plan is to save up a bunch more to bulk order the printer and the resin in one go and make the most of that insane shipping cost.

Finished the fuel fill ports and the fuel vent fins, working on adding all the rivets and cosmetic details, still more rivits, faux access hatches, lighting mounts, navigation lights, wing camera mount etc etc, probably another week of on and off work just adding details. While at the same time im working out how best to make the fuselage in my head.

That looks awesome! Following for sure!
Thanks, chaeck out my youtube for more details, I post a new vid every week and live stream most days.

Update, working on the fine details takes a lot of time and patience, inventor has crashed at least 15 time today and i am so thankful i hit CTRL+S like its a hard drug. some faux details on the top, more rivets and a faux camera pod on the underside of the wing. I think that will do it for today, my PC needs a restart and ill work on how i want to set up the internal mounting points for the servos in my head. How I install the servos will determine what kind of access hatch I need, I want to keep it all simple and light weight but some level of technical awesomeness is a must. Hidden magnet reales latches maybe? Keep the hatches minimally visible as possible.

All up it weighs 400g including the carbon fiber rods and tubes. 791mm long and 210mm chord length overall area, I'm gonna see if I can shave off some more weight. The skin is at 1mm thick for all the parts, Ill do some test when i get my printer to see if i can go down to 0.5mm skin thickness, or do some sort of overlapping lattice removal to keep some strength.

doing some next level multi directional lofting to create the basic shape of the fuselage section. the transparent blue is from the custom resin material so i can use I properties to keep an eye on the weight.
