64mm EDF Scratch Build

So I've not dug into the motor yet but I admit I'm tempted to order 2 new ones and 2nd ESC...

Do a twin motor on 3S vs 4S so I dont have to worry about burning them out.

Thoughts????

If your planing on sticking two edfs on that bird just remember youll end up with alot more weight between a second motor and a bigger battery. You can go with the smaller battery but end in shorter flight time and the chance of over heating it and lack of power. 4s would be better for the weight of two edfs and only using one battery with around a 40c rating shouldn't kill the motor at all and give you great power. But if you want to keep it lite try a 10-12blade fan on 3s for more thrust then youll have lower kv motors which will help alittle on over heating the batterys

On 3S the plane just didn't fly. Even at 800g.
I need to redesign the plane to get it lighter but it flew so well.

The motor was never setup for 4S and it burnt out the motor after a while.
4S battery was 40C and it was ok.
ESC I is only rated for 40A but that does limit it options but not the end of the world.

Dollar vs weight ;)

Still a twin 64mm EDF beasty would be fun. On the 4S I was only getting a few minutes anyhow ;)

Well if you want to keep it light and under 40amps on 3s or 4. Look into the stinger 64 jet from hobbyking, Edfs. There light and produce great power. Motionrc.com even has the same units on there stinger and a10. Motion also sells just the replacement unit for under 5 or so $ each. You just need motors to go with it which they sell too

Yep that is the one I was looking at.

That looked very similar to the one that fried.

I just dont know if I can get the weight on a build down.

I considered a BN Versa but it probably would spec out to about the same weight as the current plane.

Looking back at the pics now. Its dose look like the same one but cant really tell. I have two new units along with two that a buddy gave me. Hes a edf jet speed junky. He gave me a pair that have a pair of cyclone 4500kv motors on them( way to much for the unit) but they produce 53oz of thrust at 60amp. I fear them with that power in such a cheap unit.. but you should buy two new units along with motionrc motor for them (Much better motor). Or atleast something better at hobbyking 4000-3500kv... as for the airframe its not easy getting weight down without worrying about strength (removing paper from the inside) i have never tried the packing tape only technique and removing all paper so i can judge on that one. Ha its not going to be easy. Guess thats why i highly over power all my planes so i dont have to care about weight well to a point lol

I'm going to pull the motor tonight and check too see if I can get a new motor vs the whole unit.

From there I will flip a coin. Twin EDF vs continuing to push the limits and make a light weight plane.

All about the challenge. Still a twin would be freaking cool but very quickly approaching the costs of just buying a plane.

Let us know how it turns out. But yes that thing would be awesome duel edf. And it might come close to a store bought plane but airframe rebuild wise. Way cheaper; )

Took the motor off the fan.

Yeah this one is done but the issue is if I want to reuse the fan I need to find a replacement motor.
I suspect it will be easier to simply buy a whole new unit.

Update

An item I had on backorder just landed at HK so I couldn't resist adding an EDF motor to the shipment.

It will be interesting to see if this new motor will perform under 3S power as advertised.

The old motor is in the process of being rewound by my Dad.

I have to decide if I salvage the current airframe or build a new beast.

Ohh this morning feels like it has nice punch on 3S.

I'm rebuilding the Buzz Bomb to test that theory out.

If all goes well I'm consider building a wing or F-86 style plane.

I was going to order a 2nd EDF and ESC but the EFD is now out of stock.

So that will have to wait.

Well the test flight did not work out.

On 3S the new motor does not have enough kick.

So time to start cutting off weight ;)

Twin Time

My Dad did an incredible job re-winding the burnt out EDF.

IMG_4454.JPG

I guess I should order another ESC and build a twin edf jet.
The rebuilt motor is loud ;)

IMG_4456.JPG

I did a errr basic thrust test between the 2 motors.
There is a 100g difference so I can't do 2 pods it will have to be a twin intake with a single exhaust setup so things are kept event. Unless I reduce the power to equal it out.

More endurance testing to come.

Typical. The back-ordered motor shows up in stock the day after I place an order for the EDF ESC.

Oh well shipping is cheap.

I will now have a match set of ESC and motors. Ok well the same models of each.

This opens up the design options.

:)

That's an awesome rewind your dad did! The 262 is cool, but that Avro arrow just looks so much easier to build well.

Yeah I might test the re-winded motor in another plane. I'd hate to get it into what ever I build only to discover it will burn out.

During the bench test the ESC and motor did get hot so I wonder if there is an issue.

Either way the Twin project is into the planning phase.
