A Different Take on Davids Rocket Plane

I had the bright idea one winters day last week to put Estes rockets onto a plane. Having only found one video on the YouTube of a guy who just taped one on a trainer. Also having seen David's rocket plane, I thought I'd take it farther and build an EDF Jet that had two D sized rockets onboard that would be remotely fired whilst in flight. Unlike David's attempt at using D sized motors I am determined to not have mine blow apart LOL!

I got started on it on Wednesday and am aiming to have it done by the end of this week coming up, so I can maiden it next week end.

I'll post some photos as I go. Be kind with your comments about the build as I am not going full on crazy with it. There are no fancy build diagrams, I am building it as I go so to speak lol!

I salvaged the wings off my 70mm EDF Phazer that had a sudden and not planned reunion with Earth. To build the fuselage I am using a Rocket kit because hey! I am putting rocket engines in it.

Both wings and fuselage almost time for covering. I am hoping the cheater hole is big enough for the edf.

I've always been of the opinion that it's silly to deprive your power system of air just for aesthetics. That looks a bit small, and there's also no scoop to help guide the air in, so everything you get will be what your fan manages to pull through the side. If it were me I'd make some holes in that nosecone!

putting holes in the nose cone was the original idea but i am using the nose to hold all of the electronics to help balance the plane. i was thinking of opening the top as well. at the same time re-enforcing the side walls of the fuselage. i dont know how much force those rockets are going to put on the air frame.

almost finished just have to work on the intake for the edf. run some wires and cover it up real nice. I dedicated the day to it today so i might be finished on time.

weight so far with all electronics is 2.4lbs just over a kilo. hopefully that 70 mm edf is enough

The wings look awesome. Can't help but think that it would be more stable if the fuselage was longer. Might also give you the opportunity to add some small canards which would help with pitch control.

Can't wait to see those rockets get touched off.

I second Saiga556! Longer fuse and canards! It'd make a HUGE difference!

Set Back

so we had a set back this week as the last 4s battery i have and was going to use to power this beast was destroyed in a crash...in another jet of mine. kinda helped me though seen as i havent figured out how to set off the rockets remotely yet. any advice would be helpful

Ah, the rocket solution is easy, but you have to be very careful with the set up. Use a brushed ESC on a spare channel, and just flip it on briefly to fire the rocket. The igniters could be hooked in parallel to the brushed ESC's out put wires. I did it on a rocket plane somewhere on this forum, I will try to find it.

wouldn't it be tricky to use 2 rockets as any imbalances (ignition timing, burn rate, etc.) may throw the plane out of its trajectory?

How is it that I've completely missed this thread? This looks so awesome. I'm working on cooking up a DTFB model of a similar layout, but with only one rocket and no edf.
