Project Update: Kamov Ka-31 "Helix" CAD Completion
I’m excited to share that the CAD modeling phase for my Kamov Ka-31 is now complete! This model has been designed from the ground up with a focus on high-fidelity detail and 3D printability.
Design Specifications & Features
Coaxial Rotor Assembly: Detailed modeling of the signature Kamov dual-rotor hub system. The geometry is optimized to maintain structural integrity while keeping the scale appearance.
Mission-Specific Details: Features the prominent under-fuselage "bath" housing for the E801M Oko (Eye) airborne early warning radar, along with the distinct folding landing gear arrangement.
Structural Fidelity: * Landing Gear: Fully articulated look with reinforced struts to support the final weight of the print.
Tail Assembly: Accurately modeled twin fins and horizontal stabilizer with surface panel lines.
Engine Intakes: Detailed turbine faces and top-mounted engine cowlings for a realistic look after painting.
Print-Ready Optimization: The model has been designed with modularity in mind. Major components like the cockpit glazing, tail section, and landing gear are separate bodies to allow for easier support placement and cleaner finishes on resin or FDM printers.
Next Steps
The next phase is slicing and a test print of the main fuselage to check the tolerances on the landing gear mounts. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing how the rivet details and panel lines translate into the physical model.
