Got back in the workshop for the first time in a while today and finally made a start on the ducts for my spaceship project.
a while ago I drew up the width and height of the cylinders into Adobe Illustrator and found what measurements would be ideal for cutting them into segments. Today I applied those measurements onto the pipes and started tracing. I found the laser-line-projector method not to be ideal in the end and instead switched to using string.
Doing one half of each pipe at a time, I eventually had a set of lines to cut along.
I saw-bladed my scalpel through them by hand. Spending significant time cleaning adhesive off the blade every time I went through the tape but I soon had a set of segments.
Line-makings on the segments made it easy to rotate every other segment 180* from its neighbour. A quick masking tape jobby to ‘test-fit’ them and I have a nearly 90* elbow duct:
I will need to tape up all these gaps on the inside to prevent thrust leaking out of them but for such a rough job, I’m quite happy with it. Just need to cut up the other pipe and tape that one back together, then it’s onto the duct-to-nozzle sections.
