Anybody else scratch building tonight?

Got back in the workshop for the first time in a while today and finally made a start on the ducts for my spaceship project.

a while ago I drew up the width and height of the cylinders into Adobe Illustrator and found what measurements would be ideal for cutting them into segments. Today I applied those measurements onto the pipes and started tracing. I found the laser-line-projector method not to be ideal in the end and instead switched to using string.

Doing one half of each pipe at a time, I eventually had a set of lines to cut along.

I saw-bladed my scalpel through them by hand. Spending significant time cleaning adhesive off the blade every time I went through the tape but I soon had a set of segments.

Line-makings on the segments made it easy to rotate every other segment 180* from its neighbour. A quick masking tape jobby to ‘test-fit’ them and I have a nearly 90* elbow duct:

I will need to tape up all these gaps on the inside to prevent thrust leaking out of them but for such a rough job, I’m quite happy with it. Just need to cut up the other pipe and tape that one back together, then it’s onto the duct-to-nozzle sections.

On September 1, my daughter goes to school, to the 7th grade. I'm packing up and preserving a country house. I installed the engine and the regulator. It remains to install the aileron servo machines in the wings and you can sew them up with foam rubber. The MIG 3 project will be stopped: I did not receive a parcel from China with servomechanisms.

So…my wife, who doesn’t fly (yet), asked for a plane, so I built her this. She then requested a very specific paint job, which she says nailed it. I wasn’t quite sure at first, but I think I dig it…🤔

Anyways, almost done, have to finish the v-stab/rudder decor, but all in all a fun couple days in f building and painting.

I'm probably very old and can't see well: I make the top of the model light and bright, the bottom of the model dark and rarely blue. I have to distinguish up to 50 m from myself how the model flies (where there is an upper and where there is a lower).I haven't done this before and planted a lot of aerobatic models in the ground like carrots..

I usually paint all the cool stuff in a general direction, front to back or vice versa as the case is, only on top…underneath is always some highly visible complimentary color. I have a lot of space, but fingers crossed so far so good!😊

tell her i love her taste and i want to see her first flight attempt!

Affirmative! She does have a pin ache about her…as for flying, gonna stick her on my old Duet2 for a few laps before turning her lose on a non assisted flight…should be less rebuilding and painting…hopefully…maybe???

i wouldn't even trust myself with that paint job! i always maiden them before decoration, so i only have to rebuild the foam

So, the windshield alone makes me cringe at flying this one, I was possessed by the paint gurus that day lol 😂!

Yeah, scuffed paint means a loved bird, that’s my motto to help me sleep at least!

Here’s one I just started working on…this one’s gonna be more display but still airworthy and flying.

Starting another B-17...lets see if this one lasts more than 2.5 flights! Because the wing needs to be detachable, I'm upgrading the spars to include plywood supports in addition to the longer aluminum spars.

cool, that's a big plane. whats the wingspan?
80" wingspan. Its a hodgepodge of different styles and plans: Vincent Unrau's B-17 (scaled up 138%) for the wing and tailfeathers plus Solidwork's 3D printed parts for the fuselage, engine cowls, and turrets. Scratch building accounts for the rest. My first version didn't last long, but I think I learned a thing or two for this version: build, fly, crash, repeat...right?
