Anybody else scratch building tonight?

Running a little short on active planes after many crashes over the year and all work being queued behind the spaceship project, which is now on hold until I design the ducts in CAD. So decided to start another ‘improv’ plane. Step 1) Get a blueprint of a Bristol Beaufort, Step 2) Scale it to 5 inch props and see how its wingspan and fuselage look. Step 3) take a note on the wingspan then just make it up from there. 😁

Yesterday, I set up most of an 80mm wide wing with a nice thick airfoil, soldered some bullet connectors to a pair of motors and cut out some firewall pieces:

Today, I soldered connectors onto the ESCs and assembled the ‘engine cores’ that will be able to go into 9mm slots in the wing. ESCs will be going in the wing with some ‘radiator’ holes cut into the leading edge.

I plan to add a plywood spar to the wing to help hold the polyhedral form and serve as an anchor point for the engine cores. But first I need to set up some Y-links and bench test these motors.

72” FT C-47 simple mod fixed landing gear. These are only 6 grams heavier, each, than the metal and wood parts in the FT kit. I’m a little concerned about their sturdiness, but hey, it’s not rocket surgery. hold my beer, I’m gonna send it.

Cheers! Today saw the making of a plywood wing spar and the glueing together of base wing plates and spar to form the polyhedral. If my design skills were more evident i would have made the base wing one solid piece and had the fold-over top surface of the wing be the side with cuts in it. As err… For the polyhedral to work, I need to cut the fold-over top surface. 😅

One motor started spooling up before the other - throttle is off set. No worries, power off, put the throttle to max and power on again. Some rather artistic chirps from the motors, had to move the throttle up and down about three times but they eventually armed… The problem persists, but the other way around. 😂 Ah well, probably gonna set differential thrust on these, so I can patch that up in trim.

Did you try calibrating one esc at a time? Disconnect one, calibrate, then reconnect, disconnect the other, calibrate, reconnect. That might help. :unsure:

Hmm, I’ll give that a try. The motor chirps were certainly odd. For some movements only one motor chirped then on following movements the other chirped. Then they both chirped together as they armed. Maybe the receiver was struggling to read the feedback from two ESCs on the one channel.

By the way, I am correct in thinking that when connecting two ESCs to a receiver on a Y-Link, that I take the red wire from one of the ESCs out of the connection, aren’t I?

Yup, having both will fry your receiver.

Last night I reattached the tail of my Tiny Trainer after a bad crash in some rainy weather a little before Christmas. It's several years old at this point but I have a hard time justifying scrapping a plane that wouldn't be too difficult to repair!

I'll be taking it out again tomorrow, so hopefully the repairs hold! :p

Not building yet, but working on an EDF Foamboard design for a Phantom Cruiser (II) from Space Ghost. Something about the box wing in-flight with the heavily swept tip-fins always reminded me of this cartoon plane from my childhood.
Can you see the similarity if you squint?

new here. first post.

i started flying rc planes recently, purchased one of those amazon $99 twin prop F22 raptors you are seeing everywhere. i pretty much pushed those planes to their absolute max, literally flew the paint off them. I started flying those till something broke, would fix or replace until air frame was destroyed, pull the electronics and build my own plane. did the same with the volantex 400mm warbird series (still love).

I struggle to figure out how to make since of transmitters & receivers, but purchased a millennial flerken, power pack f, and radiomaster cc2500.

i have built several sub 100 gram planes, below is my first “real” plane. i was aiming for 250 grams without battery and went over, air frame loaded is 315 grams, with battery 400 grams.

anyways, finished it up last night. controls work….i think. throttle, ailerons, elevators work (used a servo reverse circuit for one rear servo, two rear servos for elevators). still figuring out transmitter and how to turn on stabilizer.

but this is what i was building last night…

I just picked up a Pilot Christen Eagle kit that's about 80% complete. The previous owner says he built it when he was 16 and it's been hanging in his house ever since. It's never been flown but suffered a fall and some hanger rash, but it looks like a complete kit. I'll be going over it and finishing up the ailerons, covering, and various other components.

From my research, this kit was made in the 80's and 90's. I have some of the original plans, and I've found the complete set of plans online. This should be a fun project. I'm not sure if I'll do an electric conversion or stick to the recommended 40-60 size glow motor.

With the price of 5-10% nitro extremely high, best to go to electric. If you do go glow, get the 60, the 40 is underpowered.

Welcome! Your F-117 looks great. Good luck with the build- know that you can always share your successes (and failures!) in this forum. There's lots of folks here for support, advice, or good-natured "ribbing" along the way. Have fun with your foamboard!

I luv those finds. Like L Edge stated, keep the motor on larger side & U should have a blast flying it. I'm thinking a 5055 600kv ish on a 5-6s for the electric. Post the fiinished product when done.

It calls for a 40 in 2-stroke and a 60 in 4-stroke. I'll probably go electric, but I'll have to engineer some kind of battery hatch.
