Asymmetrical Airplanes

Hey everyone,

I recently put together a cool little project that involved learning about asymmetrical flight and how it all works. I did this by reading up a bunch and then building a test plane.

Here's the video which shows how I designed mine. It also goes into how these planes work.

Massive credit to Terry Dunn who's work in this area really inspired me to give it a go myself. Here's a thread on his Parallax asymmetrical design showing how he figured out the aerodynamics and such.

I recently put together a cool little project that involved learning about asymmetrical flight and how it all works.

I glanced at your airplane and immediately thought, "Cool! Burt Rutan's Boomerang". Then I saw only one motor and one tail boom. Interesting experiment. Glad you mentioned the Boomerang. I suppose you could say having only one propeller is asymmetrical. The asymmetrical torque from having one prop is often counterbalanced with the thrust angled to the right.

Very nicely done! Here I've been working with aircraft for over half my life now and asymmetrics have always weirded me out some. Zero need for that. They just take the offsets we see in all aircraft and run with them.

Nice job. I saw a similar plane at Flite fest and at first I thought "I have gone insane, that can't fly" but it seemed to handle fine. Can't wait to see more aircrafy of this type.

Interesting project, I might try this in the near future I am sure there is much that can be learned through this expriement espically if you design plane or convert them into FB from balsa plans.

Yeah I think that may have been Terry Dunn's Parallax. I got to have a bit of stick time with that particular model and it really demonstrated to me that these weird looking planes can fly just like a normal fixed wing aircraft - which seemed like a super cool concept to learn about!

Cool. I think that I might make the German plane one day. I am surprised at how simply it works.
