Good stuff, Bug! (y)

Thanks! I am going to move Aura 5 posts into this common folder where appropriate. Been playing with my "spare" aura boards today after finding my ER5A and figure I would check the release notes. Looks like they made a few changes that affect the 5 since my V 1.22 firmware. Even a new bootloader. Still haven't figured out the versioning of the config file or if it makes a difference. Always shows 1.1 on my boards.

There is a new -Aura 5 quick start guide- for the latest 1.25 firmware. Here is the link and file. There are a few new features in the latest updates.

FT Aura 5 Quick Start Overview - English - Updated for Firmware v1.25+
Looking at the Aura 5:
  • One big difference I see is the "Quick Flip Mode" which allows 6-axis mode to be turned on/off without entering the Quick Change Mode menu.
    • It looks like this is more important for the Aura8 and Pro, which didn't have the ability to enable 6 axis mode from the quick change menu.
  • The other big difference is the "Toggle On/Off proportional Master Gain on Ch8."
    • What is it talking about, and how would this be used?
    • Does this mean the Aura5 with v1.25+ firmware now uses Channels 1-5 AND channel 8? (before it only used 1-5, and I'm using the other channels for flaps, etc!)

The big change is being able to enable and disable WITHOUT using the configurator. The RX ports have always been flexible in the configurator. I move the Flite mode from channel 5 to 6 on my ELRS setup since channel 5 is reserved for arming on elrs. I have used a potentiometer for gain in the past, and had it on channel 8. not sure if that is the default, or if I chose it because I hade CH7 used for something else, like controlling differential thrust....

I used the gain control on one of my Nano Goblins so it didn't oscillate at high speed.

Ok, that's making sense - I had to look up what Proportional Master Gain is, as I've never used it before.

My primary use of the Aura5 is in default out-of-the-box state, without using the config tool (I don't want to add that for my brand-new-to-rc students).

The pre-July 2025 Aura5 boards were:
Chs1-4 - primary control sticks
Ch5: mode switch
Ch6-8: unused

I'm working with Chs 1-8 due to the Radiomaster R88 receiver included in the the FT bundles.

If I order a new batch of boards, I should expect the default to be:
Chs1-4: primary control sticks
Ch5: mode switch
Ch6-7: unused
Ch8: Proportional Master Gain

Am I thinking about this right?
It's a bit unfortunate for me, because I wanted to use the 3 remaining R88 channels for L Flap/aileron, R Flap/aileron, and lights.

Although... I did notice what appeared to be aileron oscillation with full-throttle level flight on the Tiny Tutor (as slow as it is!). Maybe being able to adjust gain is better than being able to switch lights on and off.

Do you know if there is any throttle-adjusted gain on the Aura 5? As in: does it turn the gain down at high throttle and up at low throttle, or by default is the gain constant no matter what the throttle setting?

One thing to be aware of is that The 6-axis mode in the middle switch position is no longer enabled by default with the latest firmware or doing a "convert aura" with the FT profile. The latest V1.25 quick start guide shared above has "quick change" steps to enable/disable 6-axis on mode 2. FT Support is aware of this and are going to work with Flex to have the default configuration set back to how the boards originally shipped. I have also reached out to flex on this and a persistant issue with thrust differential.

Master gain is off by default but can be enabled with "quick change" mode like the six-axis mode. Se the V1.25 quick start guide for steps. You could potetially do a transmitter mix of the Throttle and Master gain. I would rather have it seperated for more Finite control. Issues at high speed can often be caused by wing/body flex rather than the gyro.

What is the diff thrust issue you mentioned?

If you use the configurator to set up differential thrust, you have the options for always on or on a switch. Always on is really never on, and when you configure it on a switch, enabled is disabled, and disabled is enabled. This has been a problem for several releases.

Got it. I've never used an Aura on a twin motor/diff thrust. Thanks! Diggin' this thread!

At some point I'm going to try a differential thrust mix with out-of-the-box Aura settings. The idea is to route one of the throttles through the Aura to keep launch assist active, but have the other throttle in an extra receiver port. Differential thrust would be programmed in the radio. The aura would only have the rudder for stabilizing yaw, but... I THINK it will work

I haven't flown with differential thrust before. How important is it to be able to turn differential thrust on/off during flight? I'm running out of switches on the RadioMaster Pocket!

I've only done 2 planes with diff thrust and programmed an off switch for it on both and never used it, always flew with the diff on. Mind you, this wasn't with an Aura so don't know how that would affect it.
