weird concept as it has to be performed in a known map - However it is really cool that they can do it

Well, they are only using a 2D laser scanner. So I think first they scan the area making a virtual map by controlling the plane remotely and then letting the plane fly pattern autonomously while running the scanner to check for obstacles and distance from obstacles so it does not crash into anything.
