Well, couldn’t wait for our group build night in January. Just started in the GLH today. Will get something else for the January build night. This is my first balsa build.

@Willy Nillies I'm thinking about getting your J3 cub Beta kit for the balsa build-along and saw that you recommended a 1306 3000 kv motor for this. However, I have hardly any money at all to spend on this and was hoping I could use my 1808 2400 kv motor on a 6x4 prop? Thanks for putting up with my noobish questions. I know foam board but not balsa. If it's foamboard just chuck it in the air and see what happens. You might lose a couple bucks and a few minutes of repair. It's not that way with balsa:ROFLMAO:

Edit: my setup allows me to bump the power up to 4s if need be but I suspect the 1808 on a 5 or 6 inch prop will be adequate running on 2s.

Also, do you think I could get away with using 9 gram servos? It’ll only add 16 grams and save me quite a bit of money. Again, money doesn’t grow on trees for me and it’s painful for me to pay $17 for 4 3.7g servos when I could get a 10 pack of 9g servos for $14...

The 1808 is going to be heavier than the 1306 by a good bit - and adding the heavier 9 gram servos.. it begins to add up. Not saying it won't work - just that some things are going to be a little different. Definitely don't go up to a 4s (I think you'd rip the wings off it) - stay with the 2s power. Not sure there will be enough thickness in the wing to get the 9 gram servos to install - I know that wouldn't go easy into the Barnstormer wing - the ribs just aren't tall enough. If you can get that all in, you'll need to deal with the flight characteristics of a very overpowered Cub - not something I have any experience with. Personally, I'd go with one of the other designs that's meant to handle an 1806 - that way the 1808 isn't too much extra power, unless you're prepared to experiment a lot! :D

Oops - I actually meant 3s. 4s would be nuts!:D I’ve been thinking about this more and more and after @Grifflyer showed me the 3.7g servos he uses that cost less than $1.50 each, I think I’ll get a bunch of those. However they take up to like 4 weeks to arrive so I’ll stock up on those, and when I get a bit more cash I’ll get the J3 kit, along with several 2s batteries and the 1306 motor. Thanks again for your help on this - I’m really looking forward to my first balsa build!

Ok, here are the ones @Grifflyer told me about and I went ahead and bought. For some reason you can only buy 5 at a time. I got 5 so they should be here in a few months... Then I can build my cub. I'm so excited since that cub looks amazing! Good Job @Willy Nillies I can't wait to get started! Would you recommend getting an extra pack of yellow covering in case I mess up?

Yes on the extra covering pack. That gives you some to experiment with!
