Battery short circut

I am new to soldering and did something I should not have. I wanted to change out connectors on a battery and cut the wires at the same time. The battery heated up but that was it. Did I short circuit it? Is it safe to use?

You did indeed short it out, very briefly from the sounds of it. You're lucky you didn't mangle your cutters. If the battery didn't puff, it should be okay but definitely keep your eye on it - especially while charging.

What I do is cut, solder and insulate each wire at a time. but ditto guys, sounds all good.
