Sorry, the 9x is the only recent radio I've used. Since I bought it first and have been so happy with it I've had no need for any other low cost radio. But I'm sure others on here will have suggestions. You may also want to look in the radio forum on here where it's been discussed several times with a number of options suggested.

9XR has the mods already done and all you'd need is a JR module of your favorite flavor protocol...

It does seem a very popular radio, there are quite a few tricopter pilots using it on YouTube even in the stock configuration so I won't write it off my list yet.

Basically, the 9XR is the same as the 9X in functionality. The cases and switch layout are way different and can be a deal-breaker for some pilots. If you are comfortable with performing the mods, go with 9X, if not, go with the 9XR. 9XR has the programming port and backlight installed already, but doesn't come with a module, so don't forget to factor that into your radio cost...

I would say for a beginner, just pick something simple that works. No soldering and fancy stuff, that'll come later on when he's more familiar with how stuff works. I remember when I just begun, I picked up an Align kit with all the electronics included, because there is a JUNGLE of options out there for your electronics, for example. Now I would never, because I wish to pick my own stuff, but back then it was absolutely great.

Just pick up a dx6i, it'll last you quite a while before you want an upgrade :)

I'd have to agree with stay-fun in saying that simpler would be better at this point.

I've been having a look at different radios and my current options are the orangetx t-six, a second hand dx6i or what im currently leaning towards, the fly sky fs-t6 because it is available in a local hobby shop.
