Best FT kit for C Pack?

I have an FT Power Pack C, and would like to buy an FT kit to put it in.

Can anyone suggest what is the best-flying FT kit for the Power Pack C?

I just got done building the FT Explorer with the B power pack. It says it can handle the C power pack. But I guess the question is what type of flying? I like the laziness of the slower planes.

I'm hopeful for some qualified opinions here :D

Based on watching videos, for a C-Pack single-engine plane, I ranked (1) Racer; (2) Mustang. I purchased the Racer as my only C sized kit, and scratch built the Mustang.

The Mustang was/is great. I still have the kit standing by :D Prolly next....

I practice and enjoy both lazy, slow flying and also high-speed and aerobatics.

But I'm new to the Flite Test world, and am hoping that some of you guys who have actual experience with using the C pack setup in a FT kit could share their recommendations of what is a very good combo.

I'm looking for a good match, and will be happy whatever the type of flying.

Thanks!

From personal opinion and experience, I do believe the FT P-51 Mustang is the best in terms of building/ flying/ looks. Not only does it look pretty, but it is an easy build that anyone can put together (but remember with all FT plane designs just take your time :)) and have flying within a day. Also, the plane flies like its on rails, and hand launching it is super easy at 70% to 80% throttle (it basically jumps out of your hands wanting to fly!). Oh, and if there's wind, don't you worry- the Mustang can easily tackle those gusts of wind!

Also as a side note, the P-51 can fly slow for some cinematic fly-by's or fly fast and agile for some scale dogfighting maneuvers!

I hope this helps you pugsam! Despite my quite blatant bias towards the plane, I think you'll be really happy with your decision!
Have fun!

Thanks, guys. That Mustang does look sweet.

Question: If I've understood correctly, the Mustang is one of the swappable birds......but FT is discontinuing the swappable series. Is that right? If so, is it sort of orphaned for the future?

FT Bushwacker

I just maidened a FT Bushwacker today. I think it might fit lots of the kinds of flying you mentioned.
For me, it was the best maiden flight I have ever had!

Swappable just means the power pod can be removed and put into another swappable design. I haven't heard anything about them discontinuing the idea, but not all the FT kits are swappable due to design limitations.

pugsam, welcome to the forums.

I have not flown the FT Mustang, so no comment there.

I have flown the FT Racer and the FT Spitfire on the C Pack. Both are very enjoyable planes. The Spitfire was the better experience in my opinion. Nothing wrong with the Racer, just felt the Spitfire was more aerobatic. Slows down nicely and will perform any maneuver you want to try.

I would not worry about swappables going away. Long after mankind is gone from the face of the earth, cockroaches will be flying FT Swappable Planes.

You could also consider an FT Versa Wing. Flown in the tractor configuration, the C Pack is an excellent setup for that plane. Plenty of speed and fun with the ability to slow down and breathe.

Build cheap, crash cheap
It depends on what you want, the C pack is versatile and seems to do everything pretty well aside from high speed. I've only built one FT plane but most of the other ones I built used it and the FT 3D has been the most fun, and it's durable.

I just maidened a scratch built FT Bushwacker with the C-pack today as well! Absolutely fantastic - I tree'd it about 30-40 feet up, but a neighbor saw the first pattern I had flown and came out to see it in person. He brought a rope out and we got it down after a few funny attempts at tossing a rock over the limb, no damage to the plane whatsoever. It was all fantastic flights after that, and a good conversation as well. The C-pack has plenty of power for loops and vertical climbs. I didn't even do any trimming - the built-in thrust angle is a bang-on good design.

I built mine with the separate flaps (switched at 0%, 50% and 100% with slight elevator trim in the mix), and full control surface deflections. Flying with full rates was plenty of fun, I never felt the need for lower rates - possibly due to the smaller aileron surfaces. Full flaps allowed for incredibly slow flight - it was so relaxing I was able to keep up conversation with the neighbor and continually encouraged checking out Flite Test videos and the different models. The landing gear is super robust as well, I had some harsh landings and some really nice ones, it handled perfectly in the outfield at the baseball diamond, even without a steerable tailskid. It's my first FT design with enough power to take off from grass, everything before this has been B-pack. It's one I'll recommend to my friends for their first FT planes just because I know it'll hold up to more advanced flying too.
