Are you gonna make it look like the classic sea duck?
what motors, esc, and servos are you going to use?
I will soon make a mini sea duck and I think that I will make a full size one this winter for powder snow.

It is going to have basically the same lines. The only thing that’s really going to change are the wing tips. I also have a plan to extend the booms if needed but I don’t think I’ll need to. As for equipment:
Servos: Completely open for suggestions but they’re going to have to be strong.
Motors/esc: Innov8tive Designs
BadAss 4535 440kv
BadAss 125amp ESC with Reverse
Props: Master Airscrew 16x10x3

HUGE shout out to Innov8tive Designs. They have gone well beyond the extra mile helping me with the power plant. Lucien is incredibly knowledgable and helpful. They have a great selection of motors, escs, etc. Did i mention how helpful and knowledgeable they are? Do yourself a favor, if you are ready to get a little spicy on a build, regardless of the scale, check them out. This is silly but, I really like their website. It has some neat features and has great info. Also for the record, ZERO affiliation. I am certainly not getting any deals or compensation. If they weren’t everything i just said, I wouldn’t waste my breath, or fingers… letters? I don’t know, you get the point.

https://innov8tivedesigns.com/ Really, go check them out. You’re welcome. 🤣

Old style "standard" servos should be good enough IIRC. Something like 30 inch pounds, but don't extend the output arm. My 2000 sq in combat glider used one per surface, but I never had the courage to death dive it down to the beach. Flutter is going to be your biggest concern, even dubro 1/16 control rods will flex if over 3-4 inches long. Don't even think of using plastic stuff in this, and contemplate critical directions being pull activated.

I think I’ll be good on the control surface flutter. When you say don’t consider plastic stuff, what exactly does that entail?

Plastic screw on connectors with small odd plastic wimpy barbs made from flexible stuff. Barb fits a standard horn without drilling so it's sloppy and they use rolled threads. I Like the rolled threads (stronger than tap threaded) but they make them from undersized rods. Had mind farts yesterday couldn't think of the word Dubro for the metal clevises. You'll need a drill bit for the control horns and servo arms and a 2-56 stop nut if you run them both ended. Wouldn't be so dismissive about flutter because before it flutters you lose a bunch of throw loaded, typically just when you need it. You'd also be suprised what I have had flutter, not just big surfaces while going fast. Foamboard is prone to flutter.

That help?

Absolutely it did! thank you Piotrsko

I finally gave into technology. After shopping around for 3d printing quotes, i decided to buy a printer. It will be here next week. In the meantime, ive been messing around with a little CAD and this is what i came up with so far. This is V3 of the cowling and mount and there is still the substructure where the esc will sit that i need to design.

Welcome to the 3D rabbit hole! I got my printer to make airplane parts but now use it for everything - why run to the hardware store or search online, just make it.

It is sooo so bad already and it hasn’t even gotten here yet. My wife was at the coast when i told her, she’s like “oh that’s cute honey, you’ll have fun” she has NO idea what’s about to happen. Something breaks? 3dP. Birthday? 3dP. Christmas? 3dP. Sorry I ran over the neighbors cat (meh, not really)? 3dP. To quote the greatest pontificator of our time, Homer J. Simpson, “the cause of and solution to, all of life’s problems.”. He was talking about beer of course, but the saying tracks. 🤷‍♂️🤣

Well, my life will never be the same. Printer showed up yesterday….
Other than the little test object, this motor mount is the first thing I’ve ever printed. Ever!
Insert Monty Burns “excellent“ here

Servo update: Lucien @ Innov8tive Designs talked me into some HiTec D646WP. I went with the waterproof version (hence then WP) because, well, its gonna be a boat. That airplanes better than it boats.

Plan on little sleep for a while. You will probably even be dreaming 3D design.
Have you ever seen the movie “A Christmas Story”? If you have, do you remember the scene when little Ralph is dreaming about taking down Bad Bart with his trusty ol Red Rider Range Master BB gun (with a compass in the stock) named Blue? Yeah, it was like that before the printer even got here! 🤣

what are your thoughts on PLA vs ASA filament? That motor mount is in PLA as a prototype but i was planning on re printing in ASA if its how I like it.
