Building a 40 amp Brushless ESC

I am currently working on building a quad plate type aircraft for a school engineering project. The catch is I need to design as many components as I can and not buy them. I need to make a 40 amp brushless ESC but am a bit lost on how I would go about doing this. Any help would be appreciated.

If you're building a sensorless 40 amp esc from scratch, there's a massive future for you in EV controllers where you will be able to name your price. I bow before your awesomeness in programming and electrical engineering.

Otoh, I suspect you will have to bite the bullet and have this purchased.
