Building Amphibious Tricopter for Filming

INTRO/REQUIREMENTS
Hey all, as the title would suggest, I am attempting to build an amphibious tricopter for filming. I will mostly be using it to film my crew team, but I would like to be able to use it for just flying around as well. My ultimate goals for this is for it to be able to carry a GoPro, survive a crash landing into water, and do all of this as cheap as possible. I have little to no multiroter experience, so I purchased a Proto X Nano just to get some of the basics down, and get some practice. I wont take the actual drone over the water until I get enough practice to feel comfortable enough with the flight.


BASIC TRICOPTER
I did some research and I think my starting frame will be the Tricopter V3 from rcexplorers.se (http://rcexplorer.se/product/tricopter-v3-kit/) as it has been used by many and has worked perfectly. I can 3d print most of the components of the quad which will make it very cheap, and it will be easier to mod by changing the CAD file. Its been used to film many episodes of Flight Test and works very well. Now, I have some questions regarding what to use with it. I would be running a 4C setup with it, and use these components:
3 x 900kV NTM 28-30S
3 x Mounting accessory for the NTM motor (only needed for NTM motors)
1 x 4S 3000mAh Zippy 20C
3 x Afro 20A ESC
1 x TGY-210MH Servo
2 x 9×5 Multistar Carbon props
1 x KK2 mini Flight controller
1 x High Tec Optima 9 receiver

These are a list of components that are recommended, have been used before, and work flawlessly. However, if you have any other suggestions I would be happy to hear them.


MODS:
Now, I will be seriously modifying the frame of the V3 to better fit my needs. Aside from making it amphibious, I will remove the bottom part of the frame, and add in a mounting point for a gimbal and create a compartment for the battery. In order to fit the gimbal, I will make the legs longer and sturdier. I will also create a pace to mount the KK2 board and the Optima 9 receiver on the top of the frame.

AMPHIBIOUS MODS:
Now, this is where I run into a lot of problems. I have thought of many ways to keep the drone off the water during the event of a crash (It will happen, no matter how good of pilot I am). I did some research and saw that many people put their drone in a waterproof box (except for the motors and props of course) and this makes most of the components waterproof. However, this did not seem to work very well, and impaired performance. It also made it difficult to mount an effective camera system. I was thinking about adding some foam or other things similar to foam that float and add enough so that even on a rough impact the drone would remain above the water. Any suggestions?

For waterproofing I would say, obviously, try to keep the GoPro in the waterproof case. That's an easy one :) Directly solder the ESCs, the FC, and the RX, and seal each with shrink tubing and hot glue. Use shrink tubing to wrap the boards, and then use hot glue to seal the ends of the tube. I would also recommend using some silicon over the hot glue, to make sure it really seals. I like using hot glue on electronics, because it's really easy to clean it up with some alcohol, if need be.

You can also use NeverWet spray paint on the electronics. I have seen people use it, and it works really well. But it's not very durable, from what I have seen.

You can also seal your battery with the hot glue and silicon method described above, or stick it into a balloon. I am not sure what to do about the battery connector, however. I am not aware of any water proof connectors. You can always use silicon tape to wrap the connection before each flight, but that could get very tedious. You might find a waterproof connector in your local auto store, I know they use them for those connections inside door jams in cars. Or you could just let it be, 4S doesn't carry enough voltage to seriously short in fresh water, salt water could be another story. But to make sure to seal the actual battery well, because lithium doesn't like H2O.

Ok, Update on what my thought process for waterproofing is. I think that the liquid rubber on the components would work, however, It seems that it would be hard to remove and not that durable. I was thinking about putting heatshrink around most of the components that need to be waterproof and then hotglueing the ends closed. That should keep the electronics from encountering any water. Now, I think i will ditch the gimbal idea, and go with a fixed gopro mounted on the bottom and secured to the tricopter. In order to keep the copter above water, I would attach a pool noodel in a similar fashion to that done by the guys at game of drones in their video about the topic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTlwYwi-Uys

build your quad and then find a good lockable food container that has a seal on the lid. Put all the electronics in the container except the motors. Seal up the holes where the booms come out. Done. you now have a "waterproof" quad. Its been done before. There was a few articles on one some time ago

That will block the gorpro and seriously impede my flight and video performance. I have heard of this method, as its the first one that shows up when you google the process.

Maybe add floats on the bottom AND top of the tricopter? Then you would only need to make the electronics splash-proof, instead of water-proof.

I would also say, don't ditch the gimbal idea too quickly. You can pickup a cheep GoPro gimbal from ebay for under $60. I got one, and it works perfect. The quality of the video with and without the gimbal is a night and day difference, especially if you are trying to shoot a landscape. Gimbal motors should survive a water landing, assuming you dry them off before use. You will need to seal the control board and the sensor board, but that's easy. The results should be worth it.

Leave the gopro in its case outside the box. Problem solved. Your only going to get about 7-15 min max out of most quads.

Actually, that would work very well. I think I will probably go with that.

I went through many designs and prototypes trying to DIY what you are asking and eventually found that a boxcopter style quad was the best (and by far the cheapest). The main reason for this was the water landing part. It is really easy to get it to float and it can take an absolute beating. I can drop mine from around 10 metres (30ft) and the motors barely go under the water - and of course all electronics inside the box stay nice and dry. Pool noodles etc work great for keeping the multi afloat but aren't all that good when you hit the water in an uncontrolled way (I went through some $$ in electronics finding this out...).

As Gothikon linked to previously, I also added servos to the rear motors which meant I could easily get the quad back to the speed boat. (http://www.flitetest.com/articles/maneuverable-boxcopter-rear-motor-servo-mod).

I like the idea of adding a gimbal - it should be simple enough to mount to the top of the box too.
