Cartoon Fokker DR1 The " Fokkerish"

Just joined the forum and thought this fun indoor flyer might fit well here. This is a kit from Buzzard Models which is easy to build and flies extremely well for a triplane. I built 3 and am building 3 more for some club members. The plane is rudder and elevator and handled the small gym well. I may try ailerons on the new kits. I will post more pics and video if there is any interest !! Here is a link to a short video of the first flights of 2 DR1's.

These are the next two color schemes I am going to use and a picture showing some of the many variations. I will post picks tomorrow when I get them painted. Hopefully I can put together some video of the build with some mods to the kit and some easy paint techniques using my girlfriend's make up brushes!!

This is all good stuff! It looks like those little guys fly great! Also a really fun video. I'm really looking forward to more! :D

I have 5 almost completed. The kit is super easy to build and very complete. I shortened the landing gear , covered the wheels with 2mm foam from a "to go" box, and added the wing on the wheels. The video was taken in a small single gym and flew great. We have flown 3 of the models and they all have flown the same. I am messing around with different cartoon pilots. The included tissue paper makes a neat scarf that really adds to the plane in flight.

I saw the scarf moving when you landed. Pretty cool. Are the pilots included in the kit? That guy is hilarious!

Love it. Our club flies indoors during the winter. One of these would make quite the impression. Do you know what kind of 3mm foam they use in the kits? They look like they fly much like the Flite Test Mini DR1; lots of bank with the rudder. I'll bet these will do a wicked rudder roll if given enough space.

From what I can find in 3mm foam available I think this might be what the kits are made of. The foam in the kit is softer than depron but works fine. https://hobbyking.com/en_us/aero-modelling-foam-board-3mm-x-500mm-x-700mm-white.html .The Fokkerish has lots of dihedral which makes the rudder very effective. The plane slows down really nice for indoor flying. This has been the big hit t the last 2 indoor events. I plan on building the last kit with ailerons and less dihedral. Hopefully I will finish up the kits I am working on today and post pics of the 5 that are finished.

Finished up the blue and red Fokkers, these are painted with a brush by hand using acrylic paints. Easy and inexpensive with pretty good results!!

As a fan of triplanes and the FT mini DR1, I see a DR1, I hit like. A lot love for that plane here, quite a few have recently built the might mini, and there's a pretty recent thread with somebody building a very large balsa model. A micro is the perfect addition at the perfect time, I'm sure that kit will get some interest.

Not sure how many kits he has sold. I think it was just released in October. I saw it on Ebay and had to have it. Just about done with my 5th kit. Looks to be similar in size and build to the Flite Test DR 1 . The big difference is that it is made of 3mm foam and plywood. My all up weight was 8 oz ready to fly using a larger motor. esc and 650mah battery. The plans spec the plane at 7 oz using his recommended electronics. I am thinking about getting a Flite Test Mini DR1 and doing a comparison.

That should be a tremendous help to anyone who wants to cut their own foam. You can import the image into Inkscape and trace the outline. Another option would be to print the image at 100% scale to make templates. Taking the photos with the parts on the grid was a great idea! Thanks.

I agree with @TooJung2Die. @Madspadder, thank you for putting the parts on a scaleable background.

Can you tell me what the motor/bat system is and the approx. Auw 50g - 150g - 350g?
60% reduction and done with 10"Paper plates, with a 5g motor and 1.5g servos. 150mah batt.

I also have a SPAD question. Also how much weight tends to go in the nose of these?

The auw using heavier electronics than what was called for on the plans was 8 oz or about 270 grams. The plans call for an 8 gram receiver, 250 series out runner motor, 6 amp esc,2 3.7 gram servos and a 450mah 2s 7.4 lipo battery. I used a 650 battery, and a 15 amp esc running 9.47 prop. The weight would be about 1 oz less using the recommended electronics. The plane balanced at the front of the cabane in the middle wing and needed no additional weight. With this setup the plane has unlimited vertical and flew great indoors at 1/4 throttle. Here is a link to the motor I used : https://sunnyskyusa.com/collections...ky-x2204-brushless-motors?variant=45677144911

Not sure what your "SPAD" question is. I have built hundreds of SPADS over the years. I used to sell combat planes and several unique designs about 15 years ago, so would be glad to help with any questions. Here is a picture of Spadfest that we held at Rantoul Airforce base in Rantoul , IL.

Rantoul afb? When I was there, it was called Chanute, used to park my car on the corner of the main road and the runway, next to the B36. Cool hobby shop owned by Vetter was just outside the west gate.

We used to be the ARF guys for SPADS in the early days. I actually met Dean and Tattoo who started it all. They gave us permission to sell their designs. There was a period of time when I was building up to 40 combat planes a week!! I built this forward swept design which got a lot of attention years ago. We held our Spadfest there for a couple of years, they gave us one runway and a hanger for indoor flying. It was a total blast and we averaged about 80 pilots. Here is another picture I dug up:
