Cool Ways to Detail Ft Planes!

That’s a really good idea, I might get some thinner packing tape and do that with some of my models.
I found the tape is easiest to apply before folding the foam or assembly of the plane. It is still possible to apply tape to a completed plane, just a little difficult. I start from the trailing edge and work towards the leading edge so there is not a "ledge" of tape to disrupt the airflow or to peel in the wind.

Yes, I have the same problem with the paper peeling. I have a a few different techniques I use to reduce the chances of it peeling. I use the Flite Test trick of putting hot glue on the hinge lines to keep it from peeling. Another method is to put the paint on in very very light coats until it is the right color. I used these techniques on my Bushwhacker and had no problems with it peeling on the damp grass at Seff.
Yes, I also use the hot glue on the hinge lines, and sometimes around all the exposed edges, especially on any edges that contact the ground when landing like the winglets of the mini arrow.

Okay so I was experimenting/making a final project for my art class and decided to try acrylic paints on a FB airplane and here’s my results so far.

I have not put any electronics in the plane and it probably won’t ever fly because of how the acrylic paint dried on the wings.

The picture doesn’t do it justice, it’s pretty bad. The other wing is a little warped but In the opposite way of course but it’s not noticeable enough in the picture to post it.

So what I learned is that acrylic paints can be used for detail but the main color of the plane should be applied in the normal spray paint fashion.

Acrylics will work, for best results is spray it on with very light coats and let dry between coats, thinning will make it easier for those light coats not much more then dust coats to prevent warping..

I didn't have an airbrush, (I need to get one though, any cheap options?) That's all done with a regular brush, I never intended it to fly.

I never intended it to fly.

AAAAAhhhh blaspheme not intended to fly. Airbrush do a google search just depends on good of a one you want and how much you want to spend. Pasche is one of the better ones if you can do it, the 2 stage airbrushes work better and easier push the button first air comes out and then control paint by pulling it towards you with your finger.

I wanted it to fly but I feared the weight of brushed on paint combined with the warping the drying process would cause would not make it airworthy, unfortunately I was right :(

I don' think the weight would be an issue but I should have painted the whole wing piece in one day, unfortunately I couldn't since I only have so much class time at one time.

Thanks for the advice on the airbrushes, i'll do some research once finals are done.

Make sure you seal the acrylic with a matte clear coat or crystal clear coat from rustolium. Otherwise it will run if it gets even a little wet.
