Had to add about 200 grams in the nose for CG, overall weight 1280 grams.
Anyone had any experience with this plane using a 3 cell?

I built one with 3-cell, but it didn't last very long. I was a pretty bad pilot, But it had plenty of power and was able to climb straight up, before crashing straight into the ground!

Did you use a Speed build kit or cut it out yourself?
- If you cut it out yourself, what name brand foam did you use?
How big was your battery? was it as far forward as it can go?

Hi Jason, it was a standard kit with the brown backed foam, the battery is a 2200mAh, (170 grams).
Pushed to the front.

ok that eliminates the obvious items of too small of a battery or wrong foam (some foamboards are about 2x weight, which given that there is more foam behind the CG, can mess up your CG). basically leaves motor weight, servo placement/weight, amount of glue used, things like that.

it could be due to the fact that it is covered in vinyl (if it is) that could contribute to the extra weight......

Hi Matthew, no vinyl I’m afraid, just a lot of primer, filler and plastikote, got a bit carried away…🙄
well it still looks amazing, you must have spend hours on it.....
those products you just mentioned could very possibly be the reason for the extra weight..... remember for every 10 grams of weight added to the tail you need to add x3 that in the nose.... ie you only needed to add 70 grams ~~2oz on the tail to have to add that 200grams to the nose

that is probably what did it... there is more surface/foam/etc behind the CG marks, so if you add lots of surface/skin weight, you push the airframe's CG back, which means more weight in the nose to balance it back out.

Well thanks all, I sort of knew when I was building it, weight might be an issue.
If and when it ever flies I’ll let you know.

I really hope you can sort out the CG. Am I naive in thinking that it is a solvable problem? The build and paint looks just AMAZING! Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
