DGA-6 aka Mister Mulligan Group Build

Your care package arrived this afternoon. The word help is an understatement. So that means I have to clean my bench to gear up for this build. That cowl is a LOT bigger then it looks in those pictures but it turned out awesome. It feels weird though. Much appreciated my friend. See how much gas I have in the tank tomorrow after grocery shopping. Might be able to get that in primer weather permitting. For now I am off to find more pictures of the plane for ideas on a livery. Ill get to test my newly acquired airbrushing techniques on this build.
Check out the artwork Mayan did for the stickers/livery. It's amazing! Just like the real thing... I'll probably tweak mine a bit (I'm just that sort of guy...) ;)

Yea, the LW-PLA is sort of a cross between balsa and plastic...

Oh, and @FoamyDM your package should arrive soon as well! So, I expect to see you posting soon!
Just don't forget to invite me to the group build!... (Make more sense when you get the package.) ;)

Thanks!

I designed the cowl in MicroStation (The CAD program I use in my day job.)
It's 3D printed in LW-PLA (actually weighs less than the FB version)...
Guess that means I just have to slap a bigger motor on it! (It WAS a racer after all!)

If you have access to a printer, I shared the link for the cowl back on post #71.
(Print one out yourself and join the build!)
I havent glued mine on yet, I'm toying with the idea of a faux radial engine to go along with it...

I'm leaning twords finishing mine in yellow...

If U can print a radial, it would add to the looks. I took a Dumas Mr Mulligan and converted it to a Navy GH 1 ( DGA 15 ) in yellow. I made the mods needed to change the shape of the tail and the fuselage but neglected to lengthen the wings. Oh well, a clipped wing DGA 15 was still a great flyer.

How awesome there's a historical reason for mine to be Yellow! (I had it my mind's eye it just "ought" to be yellow...)

Alright. I owe you all the final steps of the build and my maiden video. I got to be honest I screw up the flaps the first time around but have it nailed now. Didn’t really know how to set them up until I tried doing the piggy back mechanism which made me understand what I was doing wrong.

Any how I am heading to the field in a bit to make a new maiden video :).

Oh I have to decide now what I want to paint mine in. That black and Red or the Cream and Maroon. Thats a tough one. Gonna mess around and see if I can get the mix right to match that maroon on the cowl. I might mix both and go with that maroon where the black in and black where the red is.

Might even dust the prop with some purple just for giggles see if I can make it do a fancy design when it spins.

Ding Round 1 with the air brush.

Primed the cowl @kilroy07 sent earlier this afternoon and just finished the first coats of base color on it. It seems to have taken the paint well and there was no adverse reactions to the Krylon sanding primer nor the water based acrylic I just shot. I was surprised how well the cheapie Walmart poster board paint covered. the second round I shot to even out the black was like the never ending half a thimble full of paint.

Anyways here is the first part of my contribution to this build along. I will also start a separate thread to track every thing I do and just pop back in here for the group stuff and progress reports.

not sure if I want to do the bumps in the maroon I want to do for the fuselage or if I want to do maybe white for the contrast in the bubbles and the edges. Maybe even outline that center ring of that print. Possibly white with maroon tips on the fat parts of those bubbles. Will play around in mario paint and see what I come up with before actually painting the cowl.

Ok. Tracker sez foam is out for delivery so I am gonna get busy cleaning off the bench in pre to start this later this afternoon / evening depending when it gets dropped off. I figured I would use Mayans livery decal designs and make stencils out of card stock so I could maybe try paint most of them on. At least the big tail numbers will get done that way once I have the fuselage built so I can scale then to fit.

The only thing I do not see so far is the solution for landing gear. I have limited selection for wheels here with 1.75, and 2 inch FT wheels and 3 inch rubber tires I got for the Dynam. If its any other size then that I will have to make them from foam and coat them in Flex Seal to make them more like rubber and more durable. (I have redone headset foam coverings with it and its great to use. They are easy to clean and do not dry rot over time like cloth)

For this build I actually made my own wheels cause the big wheels I had were in use.
