Ki-83

Wow, all these planes look amazing I am going to be designing a Mitsubishi Ki-83 if no one has claimed it yet. Mitsubishi_Ki-83.png

rockyboy, your 3chooce of airplane are ansome!! weird unique and very experimental, like the guns in the booms and the submarine one!! I read somewhere that they canceled it because of the difficulty to seal everything at every landing...!!!!

I'm definitely in! Just have to decide on a plane... I've got a few in mind.

Also, would 3d printed parts be allowed? Assuming people upload the .stl files to thingiverse?

Absolutely yes! Pretty sure the judging would award extra points in the 'other' category for publicly released .stl files :)

Awesome! And I think it would be great if both you and Jim did the same subject but took your own design approaches. Or teamed up together! :applause:

For those that want a plane which is fast, sleek, designed for war and didn't make it, and shares a lot of design heritage with the Mustang and spitfire you could look at the CA-15 Kangaroo.

Wow! I had never run across Aussie designed / manufactured military airplanes before! I just assumed (I know - silly me) they flew as part of the British Empire in WW2 and imported planes from the various Allies. Turns out the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation built quite a few designs in addition to assembling the imports - today I learned something :)

Yokosuka Ohka Model 22

This turbofan version of the Ohka "Cherry Blossom" never saw action.

I'm not "claiming" this, but I like it and envision at as a "smart weapon" that would be air dropped and flown to the target by an FPV pilot.

It would be so awesome if someone tackled a big build of a Japanese bomber that could launch you from the air in this! And talk about having a huge advantage in the bomb drop competition! Guided munitions are upping the game for all of us! :)

Thanks! I think I might save that one for a future challenge focused on water based aircraft.... there are just so many weird and neat projects to do, and I can only do them one at a time until I clone myself

Everyone: While I encourage you to find your own unique aircraft that inspires and speaks to you, please don't discount the fun and excitement of working as a team with someone on the same design, or in friendly competition to approach the same aircraft in your own way!

Last years experience with what turned into 'Team Rockyboy' with multiple people helping prototype and feed design ideas was an amazing amount of fun! I'd like for everyone to be able to participate in the excitement even if they think designing from scratch might be beyond their abilities or time commitment at the moment.

And different from some past challenges where uniqueness was a requirement for specific reasons related to the challenge (I'm thinking the Baby Baron skin designs - and I'm not throwing shade on that - I loved that challenge!) with this challenge I want to encourage and maximize the fun of addressing design challenges in lots of alternative ways, and working together as a community so we all learn and succeed.

These are some awesome ideas for aircraft guys, looking forward to seeing them take shape! I'm still debating between a few designs:
Republic XF-12 Rainbow:

Convair XB-46

Curtiss-Wright XP-71

Martin XB-48

Or one of the giants!
H-4 Hercules with a cool Navy paint job:

B-36 Peacemaker, 6 pushers and 4 EDFs:

So many cool options and so little time..

Some neat options there! I'm especially drawn to the mid-century space age kind of look in the Curtiss-Wright XP-71

Oooohh!!! You have to team up with Slingshot and his Cherry Blossom!! That would be so awesome! The Ki-83 is a little smaller than the Betty that usually carried these types of kamikaze planes, but fudge the scales a little - we won't mind!

I was thinking of trying to build a "Flying Pancake," but with no CAD designing experience and a newbie to designing DTFB planes in general, I would have to pass it up. However, if anyone wants to team up we might get it done! I won't be attending Flite Test though, so I would only be helping with designing.

Maybe the Grumman XF5F Ship borne twin engine fighter prototype

View attachment 91094

Straight leading wing edge helps made the foam board easier. CG could be a bit of a challenge in this design - but the second prototype was developed with an elongated the nose and brought the cockpit forward a bit from the one in this image, but I'm having difficulty finding photos of that design.

She was designed to carry 2 bombs and be a tail dragger so a landing hook makes perfect sense. It was prototyped in 1939, but passed over for full production in 1940 in favor of the easier to produce Bearcat. A later iteration of the design did see action in Korea, but no shots fired at it in WW2 :)

Are you thinking of the Grumman XP-50.

When the thread started, a quick search turned up the Fieseler Fi 103R Reichenberg but I wasn't sure what the EDF rules were (thanks for clarifying this in an earlier post rockyboy). I think our "cup runneth over" with options and so I'll not claim this one yet as I have seen a lot of attractive options in the previous pages.

In case some of the people are still looking for ideas here are my "Short List" that was not really short. Before I decided on the Miles M.20, I was seriously considering the McDonnell XP-67 Moonbat, but I did not think that I could pull it off. I also looked at the list of planes that are on my "Some Day" list with the previously mentioned aircraft. I am glad to see some of them have already been chosen or are on other peoples "Short List"s also.
Beechcraft XA-38 Grizzly
Blackburn Firebrand
Boeing XAT-15
Curtiss XP-46
Douglas BTD Destroyer
Focke-Wulf Fw 191
Grumman XP-50
Junkers Ju 287
Martin-Baker MB 2
Martin-Baker MB 5
Messerschmitt ME 328
Miles M.39 Libellula
Miles M.30 X-Minor
North American XB-28 Dragon
VEF I-16

Lets have some fun.

The VEF I-16 and the Blackburn Firebrand were also on my list I really wanted to do the Antonov A-40 as well but I think that's another project for another day.

Yep! That looks exactly like the one I was thinking about (and failing to find  )

I was thinking of trying to build a "Flying Pancake," but with no CAD designing experience and a newbie to designing DTFB planes in general, I would have to pass it up. However, if anyone wants to team up we might get it done! I won't be attending Flite Test though, so I would only be helping with designing.

So, I'm not going to try and manipulate things too much, but I will throw an idea out here. ;)

Someone who I know is reading this thread has some good computer skills, is interested in this design, and can probably whip up a draft plan pretty quickly. Then someone else (you perhaps) could act as primary beta builder and performance tester feeding info back to the CAD man. Then we (the community) all get to learn from your collaboration, enjoy watching the progress, and get to build our own cool pancakes off a proven set of plans in the future.

Thoughts? Are there other team-up methods that people can think of that would seem to work well?

Actually, I think I will instead of the Ki-83 do the GM4 and team up with Slingshot.

Ok, I will try to team up with Slingshot and see if we can work together on our planes.

That would be super cool!! :applause: Historically accurate and everything!

But also absolutely not required and just a suggestion on my part - I just really want to see these take off together and land separately with dual pilots at some point! :D

One advantage to staying with the Ki-83 is it was an experimental design, where the GM4 was the main bomber heavily deployed by the Japanese in the Pacific. Both planes would be very cool to have designed and modeled, but one would score a higher in our design challenge competition.

But don't let that be the only reason you choose between them - this is just a silly little contest after all. Do what grabs your interest and you'll still be excited to work on in a few months when the test flights get tough :)
