Hi guys

Been building my own foamies for a little longer than a year now, but I lack the understanding around motor sizes.

As an example, a 2218 Brushless Outrunner, what does the 2218 mean?

Would be great if someone can piont me in the right direction.

Thanks for sharing the info ;)

You are not the only one being confused at the numbers.
Look at the 2218 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=11172 and get even more confused.
or this 28 22 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5354
But this one seems to fit the description http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12921__D2830_11_1000kv_Brushless_Motor.html

Try to go for the weight or watt when you select the motor.

Thanks, that's what I have been doing (thurst in grams or WATT) and I seem to have found this to be the best way to choose.

It is just when you look at some of the FliteTest episodes they always refer to a certain size, 450 Park Flyer, but for a newbie like me that does not make alot of sense.

But now at least I know the 2218 is for diameter and height :)

Thanks for the help guys.

There are a lot of size numbers to compare.
One way is the equivalent to IC engines, like 25e comparing to a 0,25 ci (4cc) glow - same for 10, 15, 40, 60, 90 and 120 size.
Another way is the mentioned 450 park referring to the old electric brushed dc-motors where 450 is for the lengt of the motor. 250 is for 25 mm 400 is for 40 mm 450 is for 45 mm 600 for 60 mm. I am not familiar with motors smaller than 250 and bigger than 750 in those old heavy things.
The system 28-08 could be for the diameter and length of the magnet pack - total diameter and length of the actual motor was normally more but that system does not seem to be adapted as shown in my links above.

Is there any way to decipher the Hobby King motor sizes in comparison with other brushless motor sizing. Examples: 300, 400, 450, 480, .15, .20, .25, .40, .46, .60. The pricing on the brushless motors sold by Hobby King are great but unsure what is the size of the motors are in power terms.
