People that were going to steal would steal anyway? People that were going to shoot people would still shoot people. The law only stops a very small segment of the population from doing anything.
It is a DETERENT.
If you do it and don't get caught, you might do it again.
If you're caught, there's a punishment. Fines, incarceration, or maybe "Bubba" will make you think twice next time.
But, if you're stupid enough to enjoy those things, go getcha some more.

If you're stupid enough to break the law, you're stupid enough to get caught.

Maybe not the space for debate. I going to disagree with your premise from professional experience and I will leave at that unless you want to discuss it in a better space. No feelings in it.

I would say that the laws are onlyn there to punish you once you do that stuff. And it kinda does work as a deterrent but reducing these crimes should rely not on the law itself (when has that ever worked) but in the enforcement. So in conclusion, making RC pilots get RIDs is kinda sueless cuz the people who will do bad stuff will of coyurse not install one. For that to work the RIDs would have to be embedded inside the RC electronics very difficult to remove without rendering the electronics useless, so you can't make a UAV without some sort of RID, but electronics technology isn't there yet so...

there's no way to know how many laws haven't been broken because they are in place. but think of it the other way around. how much crime would there be even though they wouldn't actually be crimes) if there weren't any laws.
how many more of us would fly over 400' if there weren't a rule?

As a side note... Some AMA fields can fly higher than 400' depending on the airspace they are in. My field can do up to 700' for example.

Thats an easy answer: A couple of Idiots (its always because of a couple of idiots we get more rules)

it's always a minority, but even one drone threatening airspace is too many. yes, the rules won't stop all of them, but with no rules, people wouldn't even know

That is, for the necessary logical rules. There are quite some rules (even outside of RC) that are so ridicolously specific that you can know what someone tried to do (can our radios even handle connection at more than 400 feet and can we even see the plane?)

I can see my Phoenix 2400 glider at 700' which is the limit for our AMA field. It will get there really quick on a heavy thermal day. Radio... No problem, even at low power. So 700' alt plus however far away it is.

Ok, I will have to redo it with a nano goblin.

I played with my much smaller ZOHD drift with a FC LOS. I would see how far out I could get it before losing it at 400'. Over 1/2 mile. Hit RTH and would see where I could see it again. 800' ish away at 400'.
