Help! ESC working very weird

Hello.

I got a FT Tutor starter kit for christmas. The build has been going great, but my ESC is not acting right. The ESC is the Power Pack C version, and I have a Flite Test motor labeled 2212-1250KV. I was able to pair the R84 v2 receiver with the Pocket CC2500 transmitter, and the servos work fine. The problem is with the motor. When plugging in the ESC with all controls at 0, it does the normal turn-on beeps, but then goes to a 4-beep increasing tone a few times before stopping. The throttle does nothing, the ESC just beeps twice repeatedly when I put the stick higher than the midpoint. In "calibration mode" by moving the throttle to the top, it connects just fine, with the normal starting beeps, but the top part of the stick travel does nothing. After the midpoint on the way down, it ramps up before falling back down at 25%, and ramps up again maxxing out at 0%. I haven't modified any of the firmware on the controller yet, as I wasnt sure if I would lose the presets it has in it.
Current firmware details:
FW: edgetx-pocket
Version: RM Factory (1fdb58ba}
Built by: Edge TX
Date: 2023-07-27 15:24:19

Thanks for your help!

Joe

Edit: Found the post from nickg4bruins from September 2025 with the same issue, but unfortunately, calibrating the sticks did not fix the issue.

It sounds like the ESC is not calibrated, so simple things first.
To calibrate the ESC:
  1. Remove your prop
  2. turn the Xmitter on
  3. bring the left stick to full throttle
  4. plug the battery into the ESC
  5. wait for the beep
  6. lower the left stick to minimum throttle
  7. wait for the beeps
Done

Give that a try and get back with us.
Oh, and welcome to the forum and the insanity!

I tried that a couple times while troubleshooting. It didn’t fix it. The throttle would do nothing for the top half of the stick (50-100% throttle), and then have 2 “peaks” of power at 25% and 0%.

Thank you for the welcome! I’ve been wanting to get into RC aviation for a while but never knew how to until now.

Strange... Do you have another esc to try? Can you post a pic of the receiver hook up?

No other ESC unfortunately, this is my first build.

On the radio go to model inputs and take a picture of the screen so we can see what the mapping is.

Also, in your radio, go to the channel monitor screen. It will show you the value being output for each channel. Look at channel 3 and move your throttle up and down. You should see the output bar for channel 3 go from positive 100 to negative. If it doesn’t, then your may have set reduced rates on that channel.

Throttle goes from -100 to 100

The channel 3 trimmer must be in the lowest position.Without this, the gas management conditions will not be correct.

Just for grins: what does a servo do plugged into the motor channel? If it's janky, you have a bad reciever

Thank you for all the replies and images. Those have eliminated a lot of possibilities. Can you please do one more thing and post a video of the calibration procedure?

See to the right of THR in your modle input, it does not say THR. Try changing the input
to say THR next to it to see if that works. Only thing i can think of. Not sure if that is it, but fingers crossed.

It didnt give me an option to pick THR, and after I disconnected the rudder servo to test the reciever, it wont give an option for RUD either.
