First scale indoor attempt

Some time ago I've been watching a lot of videos on the internet of these incredible slow indoor flight models and I think it's time to give it a try. I don't know if this will work but for now I'm really enjoying the build and of course I would welcome comments and feedback.

I was looking for some slow flying scale model, and I think nothing better than the first airplanes in history. Those machines had more restrictions than functionalities hahaha, so slow flying was a maximum for them, so I went for the Blackburn 1912. (lot of plans available on outerzone and aerofred)

Specs:
wingspan: 840mm
wing chord: 175mm
target weight: up to 250g

For this construction I wanted to mix some 3d with balsa construction, so I opted to design and print the ribs.

I used styrofoam for the wing tips couse 3d printed it was to much heavy.

And finally the wings were covered with tissue paper. I used yellow couse i coudn;t find beige

each wing weights about 21grams.

This is the setup i am planing to use:
2s 350mAh lipo battery
2 hitec 9g servos
10g 50W brushless motor with a 5x3 prop
Eflite 2s 8A ESC
Micro FrSky receiver (2.4grams)

All this weights 73grams. Hope this not to be to much heavy... this is the lighter setup i can find here (thanks to danskis )

Great job, I've always wanted to build that model. A question before I forget. I am building a Zlin Savage bobber out of balsa and designed an airfoil with a similar under camber to yours seeking slow high lift. I plan to cover it with micro-lite iron on and wonder if the under camber will be a problem when you shrink the covering on the bottom of the wing? Will need to stick cover to the entire width of rib before shrinking to keep it from pulling flat across?
My progress is on wing construction at present. Fuselage is ready for electronics and tail feathers are done. I plan to use the spare electronics that I bought from Horizon Hobby for a UMX Timber Evolution. I'll take pictures this week. It's a total scratch build patterned after a foam Micro Dancing - Wings Bobber. Cliff Harvey built and flew the D/W kit. Keep up the good work :love: Seahunter

Hi Fred, I glued the bottom cover to the ribs and frames to avoid warping, and it worked well for me. I would advise you to do the same, and it should work for you, but there is nothing like experimenting and making mistakes.
I'm glad you can use such light electronics, this allows you to build a little heavier model and have more margin for error.
Please update me with photos as soon as you have them.

From the title, I originally thought you were heading in this direction. I tried to join down this path, but the tiny receiver went belly up - https://forum.flitetest.com/index.p...t-indoor-rc-airplane.61571/page-2#post-734315

But I see you really do mean scale as in reproduce an existing plane. That's fantastic. I'm surprised something like that can fly in something like a high-school basketball gym. Would you mind sharing some of the links that got you interested?

Here is a little bit of the progress of the last month. I've been on hold for a while because of the tracks and because I had run out of cyano.
The upper part of the fuselage is still to be finished and the lower part of the fuselage is waiting for being covered. But we can already see the progress
