right now, my ESCs are set up for a RC plane, but I am trying to use them in a tri-copter. Also would BLHeli_s firmware work for a tri-copter? Thank you!

I am a recovering tricopter addict and have used just about every protocol with them. BLHeli is the firmware, not the protocol. Chances are, that ESC already has some form of BLHeli on it, and may just need parameter adjustments. You should be able to use BLHeli-passthrough to configure/flash with BLHeli-configurator after hooking the ESCs up to the flight controller.

No. You would need a more modern FC that runs BetaFlight, INAV, or ArduPilot. There are also ways to configure or flash using a usb dongle or arduino.

Give the ESCs a try first before attempting to flash them. They should work as-is with a KK2. Make sure you do your initial testing with NO PROPS.
