Flite Fest 2016 - Big Build Projects

Anybody planning any goofy build projects while at FliteFest?

I'll be flying in, and as such, won't be able to bring any whole planes with me. Since I'm going to be spending my first day assembling planes, I thought it would be cool to build something big.

I know some of the Flite Test crew have some prepared big builds (200% size FT Planes), and think it would be awesome to complement what they're doing.

Right now, the plan is to build a 90" version of my Mighty Mini PBY. At 7.5 feet it will be pretty close to pictures I've seen of other big stuff that will be there.

The plan is to have electronics all set up and ready to go, and maybe some pre-built pieces to make the whole assembly process as quick as possible. I'm flying in early wednesday morning, so I'll have time to do some shopping for spar pieces, and any other large odds and ends I can't bring with me.

Anyone interested in helping out, or does anybody have a project they need help with?

I am definitely interested in helping out. One thing to be aware of is that, at least last year, the electronics being sold would not facilitate the building of a large plane. If I was you, I would try to bring all of the electronics with you. With that being said, it is certainly possible that there will be a better electronics selection this year. And if worst comes to worst, there is a hobby shop somewhat nearby but there prices are not competitive with online stores like hobbyking.

Good point, I'm planning on bringing all the electronics I need with me, all soldered together and ready to just drop into my planes. Probably need a couple big 4s batteries and some motors a bit bigger than a C pack.

Stuff I anticipate needing help with are cutting out foam, and then trying to glue everything down. Might be helpful to have more than one pair of hands, and more than one glue gun.

You should be able to find motors. I will have a couple 4s you can use if you want.

Well there certainly will not be any shortage of hot glue guns there. I personally I have never used any of the power packs, but on my 90 inch Beech 18 I use these motors. https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=70670 With three blade 12x6 props on 4s, they produce about 6 lbs of thrust each. With a 13x6 on my combat delta, it will produce over 6 lbs of thrust on 4s but that is pushing the limits of the motor.

That's a lot of power. I'd like to be able to spin an 11-12" triblade, but I don't think I'll need much speed. The whole plane probably won't even hit 4 lbs. I'm gonna have to do some calculations.

Yea, my beech 18 came out very heavy. It has steel landing gear and a huge amount of plywood. A 90 inch plane could definitely be built lighter, but I ended up overbuilding mine.

I have something massive in the works, but it will be completed & thoroughly tested before FF. I can't release any major details yet, but I can say that it could be a possible world record in itself. Ironically this never even crossed my mind until I found out the Guinness guys were going to be here this year.

Anyways, I'll be making the official reveal of this mystery project while I'm up there.
I think I've got the entire FT crew hyped up for the unveiling :p

I've recruited a couple of "the guys" to bring some spare parts for a Frankenplane build. It's a blind build. We each have a part and we will try to put it together while we are there. We have no clue what the other person has other than relative size.

Haha. Sounds like that will probably be a pretty hilarious plane.

Just for clarification they most likely will not have an official rep on site. We will have to submit proof via video and picture. It was a tad expensive to have an actual rep come out on site.
