Flite Fest 2022 Community Challenge – WWI “Dawn Patrol”

Exactly! I mentioned elsewhere in the thread but to the extent that there is a "winner" my intent is to let the Folks at Flite Fest vote on a best in show, but FlyingTyger is on the mark. We just want folks to join in the building fun and build/share some interesting models.

Well I'm continuing my work on the Nieuport 11 "Bebe", so just check my thread for updates, I guess??

You said you're building your models to the same size as the mighty mini series, right? I'll list you in the participants post and link your thread from here. I want to keep this thread centered on topics related specifically to this "challenge", new folks announcing their builds, and topics related to the event at FF once it gets closer. Updates on individual builds will stay within their own build logs, except when they are completed/flown I'll add them to the completed models post (2nd post) in this thread. That way the thread is manageable and new folks can find what they are looking for quickly.

Happy building everyone!

Your Monday Morning Motivation post: I've been enjoying seeing the Adam Savage videos from his tour of Udvar Hazy (Smithsonian). @willsonman , @earthsciteach , and I actually attended an open house at this location and touring that restoration hangar was amazing. @willsonman had a great conversation about fabric and thread count... these guys recreate and restore these aircraft down to period accurate fabric.

Realized that the Sea Angel wing looks an awful lot like the Moraine saulnier AI, going to cut one out tonight and do the fuselage from there.

Oh what the heck. Count me in.

I stopped building fairly abruptly in the middle of last year - a lot of life events got in the way. I was hoping to rebuild my motivation this year, and complete the only-just-started DH88 (13thsquadron design - a beauty) that’s still packed away. But I read this thread and found myself planning a design without intending to, so I guess I’ll do a WW1 plane and THEN finish the DH88. Unexpected, but any motivation is good, I suppose.

I’m in the UK so I can’t get to FF2022, but you can put me down for a Sopwith Pup. I’ll try and fly it at the same time as the FF dawn patrol is airborne - lunch time for me, I’m guessing? I thought a Pup would be impossible to balance, but having seen how Josh Orchard did the battery in his FVM Ö1 Tummelisa (mounted vertically on the back of the firewall - clever!) made me think maybe it can work. Only one way to find out.

If anyone needs me I’ll be on Outerzone looking at old balsa plans...

Laterz.

Welcome aboard! I completely understand the motivation issues and the need to jump when motivation strikes.

Scout XL for me. I should have plans ready for anyone who wants to build one in the next 2-3 weeks. If the idea of scratch building a one-off plane is intimidating, or you just don't have the time, this may be the option for you. The idea with the Scout XL, is to allow anyone who can build a Flite Test style plane from plans and a build video to be able to join in on the fun.

idk.. Might make this at first I thought "1/6 scale???? that's so big!" but then I remembered how big it WWI planes were

If I do then I want to make a albatross which would be like 1.4m wingspan, so not that big

hehe...

Gotha at 1/6 scale: 155.5 inch wing span, or basically 13 feet. That's why mine is 1/12 scale at around 78" span.

It's funny what some consider "big" airplanes. Anymore, anything over 70" is big and anything over 100" is huge to me. anything under 60" is "adequate" and anything under 40 inches is too small. That all stems from how well my flying field handles these airplanes. Under 40" will not survive unless it's a belly-lander. Old farm land and there are others here that can attest that my field is THE place to test the durability of your landing gear. Larger airplanes are also limited due to the length of runway and confined space of the locale. Any heavy (WWII) warbird over 70" is a no-fly. The approach and runway are too small. I really push it with my 68" P-47. My 1/4 scale Fokker D.VIII (82" span) is a PEACH at my field because it's super light and has loads of wing area. More of a powered kite than anything.

Yeah, someone is doing the Pup. My all time favorite. I did a 1/10th based on the one that is still flying in your neck of the woods @ the Shuttleworth. That is what I did with batt. I put the ESC on the side of the motor mount & the batt slides in vertical in between the motor and the servos. I still had to add just a little more weight, but very flyable.

Interesting to see how you did yours - thanks! I’ll also do the colours to match the Shuttleworth plane - seems appropriate!

WWI was 1914-1919 and the first Stearman was in 1927... I'd say that qualifies as a golden age aircraft rather than a WWI era aircraft. LOng answer to say, personally, I don't think so. @wilmracer is running this gig so I'll let him chime in.
Golden Era might be a good idea for Flite Fest 2023 Barnstorming Challenge!
