Update. We start tonight. I showed my son the Battling Blenders video and he was all over it.
Six months of full-contact Baby Blender combat

Son: "We can do that?"
Dad: "Sure once you are able to fly you can try and catch me!"
Son: "What if I crash?"
Dad: "Please this is foam board. You've see how often I've crashed!"
Son: "Right you're a bad pilot."
Dad: "You are so going down."

I'll report back once we have some progress to show.

Guys i have a question -
does the fire-wall need to have a down-angle? when im placing the part that connecting the power pod to the body with the 2 skewers, im geting a down angle on the fire-wall due to the thickness of the foam...is it normal?

That foam spacer is normal. I think I still added more down angle by adding a 1-2mm spacer to the top motor mount.

When the YC Cargo plane crashed last summer he was devastated. Ran to the car crying.

I've since managed to teach him this is all about fun. Foam and cheap RC parts is a match made in heaven.

So when I flew into the tree and he was watching through the FPV gear we both had a good laugh about how the plane spit in half.

Honest I'm not that bad of a pilot ;)

What servo arm holes are recommended for rookie pilots?

Thanks.

I've been going with 3 holes up on the servo horn and the middle hole on the FT control horn.

also, 30% expo in both rates 75/95 on the throws. One Rookie to another, maybe start with 50/75 on the dual rates.

My son's radio is a basic 6 ch so there is no expo.

That said I'll slow the throws down and smooth them out.

Thanks.

I have to say this plane is a fussy one to build.
Well the wing is at least from the scratch build pov. The fuselage was a snap :)

- The firewall is an inch thick with 4 layers of foam and 2 layers of wood inset into the foam.
IMG_8794.JPG
- Since I went pod less I opt'd to move the servos into the fuselage.
IMG_8795.JPG
- The wing was a very time consuming adventure compared to the other ones I've made. Still seems strong.
IMG_8801.JPG
- Since I expect the plane to live a hard life as a trainer I decided not to add the turtle decking.
IMG_8802.JPG
- Battery port access.
IMG_8805.JPG
- Simply remove the lid.
IMG_8806.JPG
- Lots of room. I also moved the skewers up.
IMG_8807.JPG
- 1100 KV Donkey Combo motor and a 8x6 prop. Prop saver coming soon.
IMG_8808.JPG
- Belly covered.
IMG_8810.JPG
- Tail servos
IMG_8813.JPG
- And radio all to be set in their final locations once I am happy with the CG.

Some was busy today.
IMG_8840.JPG
Worked very hard to paint.
IMG_8850.JPG
Used different colours and patterns to make it good and easy to see.
IMG_8854.JPG
"I know this plane is going to get banged up as I learn but at least it will start out looking good."
IMG_8872.JPG

And even better James' Papa brought over his BB.
2 of the 3 RCAF planes on display. Rousseau Canadian Air Flight.
IMG_8880.JPG

My BB is being built and will be ready for next weekend weather willing.

So I crashed my son's BB. Winds were to high, I took off in a bad spot and was way to close to my car.
Opt'd to hit the deck vs the car's window.

That said the damage was very limited to the wing struts.
IMG_8991.JPG

Top wing took the blunt of the hit.
IMG_8994.JPG

Bottom was localized to one corner.
IMG_8996.JPG

A little glue and extreme packing tape...
IMG_9000.JPG

I added some pieces of foam to the wing struts but did not bother doing full pieces.
Will be interesting to see how this repair hold ups.
IMG_9006.JPG

She's back ready for another flight.
IMG_9002.JPG

To be honest I figure if it can handle what I did to it we should be in good shape.

My BB will be ready shortly.

I was thinking about building a slightly smaller version of the Baby-Blender, since I couldn't get foamboard in the right size for decent price. :(
I'll probably shrink it to 75% of size which would be approx. 45cm (17.7") Wingspan.

but since it's going to be my first scratch build I'm not sure about which electronics to use.
I have some spare parts lying around that I'd like to use. but maybe someone with more experience can tell me if it makes sense. :)

  • servos: 5g Hextronic HXT500 (already got some)
  • 10A ESC (already got one spare lying around)
  • Turnigy Park 250 Motor 2200 kV (don't have it yet)
  • 6x3 Props (have some spares already)
  • 2S 500 mAh battery (got some from my mini-breeze)

I guess that the motor isn't the strongest for the plane but I don't want to do any Aerobatics (except maybe some loops) just cruise around at medium speed.

Would this setup work? or would I need a bigger motor (and probably a bigger ESC and Props as well)?

thanks for your help,
Max

BB update.
This plane can handle some strong winds. Video is coming.

I've made a few changes after repairing the plane from the prev parking lot crash.

- Added full pieces of foam to the side spars. Enough of the weak stuff.
- Did some work under the wing because the prev crash had weakened the whole setup.
- Moved the RX down inline with the stabilizer which sits onto of the wing.

Now during the test flight I lost power.
Using a HK Donkey Combo 1100 KV setup.
According to the manual this is an overheating protections feature.
I've added an air duct.

Today was supposed to be the first time i fly my baby blender.
I spent so much time on it...making sure every aspect is perfect...but i can say i wasted my time.
I tried to take off today (by hand and by ground)...but the motor is just too weak. its the recommended NTM Prop Drive Series 28-26A 1200kv / 250w with the 1300mAh 3S 25C Lipo Pack...like i said the kappa foam here in israel is just too heavy...i dont know what to do

Has anyone tried putting in individual aileron servos? I'm finally putting my kit together, but am debating trying for a 5chan flaperon set-up. My radio has the settings for it. Any downside?

We flew 2 of the blenders last night and my next mod will be to put in 2 aileron servos.

I am just not happy with how the single one behaves.

Don't think I'd put them in the bottom of the wing either.
So top mount it is.

Only other issue I saw last night was I over heated my ESC and melted the shrink off it.
Going to drop the prop down a size and stick the ESC outside the fuse.

Also, I was going to try to run a DT750 with a 10" prop on this. I was worried it would overweight the nose, but reading through the threads here, maybe the extra nose weight will be okay.

Had a 10x6 on but over powered the ESC.

Flew nice but was odd. I have a bunch of washers under the nose right now. ;)
