Hey Fly boys and girls. Jerry here. Not new to the forum but this is really my first post. I recently saw their new 16 Foot RC Mega Plane and it really peaked my interest. I'm 58 and been in RC since 1989. First plane was a 2 ch Cox Fairchild 24. My dad is also an aviation nut but due to health issues he was never able to pursue it. I joined the Army in 85 and many transatlantic, in Europe, Ft Bragg, I had to opportunity to fly in aircraft and choppers which was a blast because those guys want to either , scare the crap outta you, make you throw up, or both. But for me, I ate that stuff up. Sittin in a blackhawk, doors open, climb up roll 90 and I'm staring at the ground. That kinda stuff. and I ALWAYS thought, "My Dad would be loving this.
Flash forward to today and I'm not looking for sympathy. But I am on clock. 2 Months ago Dad was diagnosed with small cell cancer in in colon, prostate, and lungs and the doc said it's fast moving. With treatment he could make it another year and a half if he's lucky. My Dad's a logical man. Spend 6 to 8 months sick and restricted movements. He opted to just ride it out. He loves to watch my brother and me fly our planes and quads and we got him a DJI and they are so intuitive he picked it up real quick and loved flying with us. But he couldn't fly the planes due to polio as a child effecting his left arm, and the reverse controls when ya turn the plane around really messed with him. I'm talking to some pilots in a local club with a private strip to see what they'd charge to take Him and me up as all these years, we've never flown together. But until then, The Flite test boys have ignited a fire in me.
Their plane parts were CNC cut and glassed with very light weight fiberglass. That's exactly how I used to build hovercrafts, NOT RC, real ones you could play in, I'll post pix and a video clip later. But I'm going to start working on a similar build. I can now buddy box him and take control back if he gets in trouble not to mention with the new flight stabilizers, I believe he'll be able to fly it fine. Just a giant slow flyer. Building the plane I don't think will be too much trouble. I don't have CNC but have jigs and templates to guide the hotwire make any shape I want.
The blocks of foam I work with are 40"x 48" x 16'. This first pic is a 6" x 40" x 16' slab. Perfect for the main wing after cutting, some shaping, weight reduction and so on. The other pix are the block, and my hotwire slab cutter. I just adjust the arms for the depth of cut I want. As I build I'll try to take pix and keep anyone in the group that's interested updated. And for fun, here's a couple Hovercraft I built. the Raptor 18', 16hp B&S for lift and 3 cyl geo metro for thrust, avg 45 with 4 adults aboard, and the Venom 14' 12hp lift, 3 cyl geo thrust, and avg 60 with 3 aboard. It was my hotrod. The video is at a Hover-In, (Like a Fly-In) in Big Spring TN. I did the music track. Hope you enjoy. And thanks for listening. OH it's an old WMV file, (Not supported ) so if you'rre interested here's the youtube link.
