I'm pretty sure that with the youth membership, you get the same benefits as a full member, and I got it for free
I just looked it up, the youth membership (anyone younger than 19) is $15, it has the same benefits as the full AMA membership.

I’m not sure when it changed, the youth membership used to be free.

Here is the link, cost is at the bottom of the page.

I just renewed mine. I thought I had got the youth membership when it was free but I signed in and it said I didn't have an active membership, so I paid 27$ for 2 years.

It's not ideal, but $15 is still cheaper than $75/year...which reminds me, I need to see when my membership expires!

So does the insurance just cover when your flying at clubs and events?
I'm not quite sure about that, but this is what AMA's website says about insurance under services at this page:
https://www.modelaircraft.org/membership/programs-benefits
  • Liability Coverage for the Operation of Model Aircraft, Boats, Cars, and Rockets
  • $2,500,000 Comprehensive General Liability Protection for model activities for members, clubs, site owners, and sponsors
  • $25,000 Accident/Medical Coverage for members
  • $10,000 Maximum Accidental Death Coverage for members
  • $1,000 Fire, Theft, and Vandalism Coverage for members
  • Primary Site Owner Insurance

I agree with @JasonK, the AMA insurance is liability only, 2.5 million if I recall. One catch, they are secondary insurance, they make you use your primary liability insurance first, home owners or renters liability insurance. If your primary insurance will not cover the accident, the AMA insurance will step up.

that is intresting? so if something happens away from your home, they want you to put a claim against your home owners insurance first? if that is the case, to me it sounds like an extra cost to go to an AMA airfield (which is why I have it...)

Agreed, it is an extra cost.
30 years ago there was a competing organization called Sport Flyers, they had insurance, a magazine, club flying fields & the dues were far less than AMA.

It was a great organization but the AMA sued them into bankruptcy.

I got My AMA youth Membership last year in 2020 and it was free then, but now it costs 15$!

I'm pretty sure my membership will last till the end of 2022!
I'm glad I got it when I did!

Actually, that's exactly when you want the AMA insurance - if you are flying away from home and hit someone else's house/vehicle/property and do damage, AMA insurance can provide coverage. It's not perfect, but it can help cover you if you have that accident.

One of the other benefits of the AMA is that they send you a copy of Model Aviation magazine, which is kind of an added bonus, at least for me...And they've been pretty supportive when we've done Maker Faires for our club, sending us some Model Aviation copies as well as a few gliders and AMA forms.
