I watched a video of the DARPA Lift Challenge (from Wed or Thur) that was more than 10 hours long (I did a LOT of fast-forwarding to the actual flight attempts) more than 90% of them had catastrophic fails/fires. Some did not leave the ground, and only one had multiple successful runs.
The event shirt should say "DARPA Lift Challenge: It's Not Easy!"
