did you end up with one signal and one ground?

I copied this image, so 2 pins, and the one attached to the casing.

I think one of the two pinned wires are obsolete (but this setup causes no harm). :D
The standard FlySky to FLySky trainer cable can be plugged in any way round. One pin is the PPM input and the other is the PPM output. Hence the requirement to have them crossed.

A single wire can be used where one end goes to the trainer only and the other to the student only!
