The best places for depron style foam in Aus is usually art/framing shops. They sell various thickness paper/adhesive covered sheets (A0 and A1) for mounting prints and stuff like that. I recently got A1 6mm sheets for $5.99 each from a small art shop in Canberra. I've been told I can get A0 sheets and bigger for even less.

cool, never thought of art shops, thanks!

Crazy flyer/crasher :D
Which equals 999949 square millimeters which is 1 square meter in a perfect world where the foam would have been cut more precise.

Scott or anyone else: I am going to be in the Houston Tx area the first week of January on business and would love to pick up
some full sheets of Depron foam to bring back to the wilds of Canada.
Any suggestions (yes I have exhausted Google search's and sent countless emails to no avail)
Continental Airlines are awesome when you are a gold member so I can bring it as carry on...

Like undcon i will order from germany - but normally a mixed box of 10 sheets 6 mm and 20 sheets of 3 mm. size 125*80cm (50"*31")
the adress is https://shop-rc.causemann.de/index.php. The freight cost is not excessive inside europe but it can be smart to share a box between some flyers.

After a bit of searching, I have come up with "Isoboard", its an XPS foam insulation. Is that similar to what you guys use?

The place that sells this stuff is at the other end of the country, but they do sell single sheets. But the shipping would be horrendous, but I'm asking them anyway.

Any other Aussies found this stuff for sale in a retail chain?

Thanks,

Isoboard isn't much like foamcore. Foamcore is depron (meat tray foam) with paper on both sides.

The more you buy, the cheaper it is. Here's the best pricing I've seen (and on our side of the country): The Sydney Art Store

I managed to get some foam board from a local picture framing place. :D What i am after is the foam used to hot wire cut out some wing cores. It seems (well to me any way ;)) that the pink/blue foam insulation is XPS?

I got a replay back from foam sales, and a minimum pick up fee for courier is $55AUD or cut into 3 sections, 1 sheet via post for the same amount.

Am i on the right track here, or way off?

Thanks,

NAM

If you are cutting cores then you can get the cheapest insulation boards in the timber shop (white, blue, red - any available).
It is totally different from the sheets (depron style) you are using for indoor flying.

3" boards cut up with hot wire. Combat/Slope wings. 4 meter glider wings covered with abachi veneer.
Foam insulation wing cores cut with hot wire was common decades ago - long before indoor electric flight and depron.

thats the problem, its not available! Australia just isnt cold enough to make this stuff popular, so its not stocked in hardware stores, well at least not around here. :(

That foam your using, thats XPS?

Cant tell the letters but the same as in the box you buy Tv or other big electronics.
Dont you have any companys building cold stores? Refridgeration companys use foam as insulation. It is often lower densitys than the insulation used in homes.
It is the same insulation for most structures.
I have seen 1 meter (40") thick blocks under concrete floors as a filler when building houses - not for insulation but to fill up, replacing lots of heavy concrete if you have to dig up a lot of clay to get to better grounds.
Funny - your location - i have been there ;-) Working in insulation companies - like outside Sidney, Melbourne, Christchurch and Oakland - opposite side of the world from me........

@Non Action Man,

If your looking for Polystyerene foam to cut out wing cores with a hot bow, Try "Clarkes Rubber" they have stores all over Australia.

I got some 50mm boards about 750mm x 1.2m roughly for a decent price, From memory they stock about 5 different thicknesses, the boards are ear marked for some wings, but at the moment they are being used as building boards.

I have a store about 50 seconds from my Office, i can drop in and see if i can dig some part numbers up for you ?

That would be awesome! we have a generic rubber and plastics place here, but the guys doesn't seem to know his stuff. If its not acrylic or flexible soft foam, he hasn't heard of it.

Eagle, it depends on several things. Such as, what kind of wings are you making, where are you located, how large a plane are you making?

My friend that builds large fpv flying wings makes them out of blue board, 4" insulation from Lowes. Really light and super strong. Then he cuts out spaces for everything and covers it. They fly amazingly well and carry lots of weight so it can't be that heavy.
