FT 3D - Scratch Build

I apologize if this has already been covered, but has anybody been able to get the CG to balance with 2200mah battery and still use the hatch to change out the battery. They way I have it setup now I have to remove the power pod each time to reach the battery because its up close to the motor. It's not a huge deal, but it would be nice to have it setup to where I just pop the top hatch to change out the battery. 2200 is the only size batteries I own.

nunieboy, I have flown the FT 3D with a smaller motor prop combo and it flies fine (could even do inverted) but I was full throttle the whole time just to keep it up in the air. And forget about doing tricks like hovering and fast/small loops, but it does work.

I bought the FT 3D speedbuild kit (recently) and, contrary to what was stated in the V2 video, there are no marks on the wings to specify the position of the vortex generators (i.e., in the V2 video at 15:30, Josh says that in the new kits there will be "two little dots" to mark the position of the VGs). How are people positioning those? The only thing I can think of is to print out the plans, tape together the tiles, and measure off of that (since the VG positions are shown in the plans). But I bought the speedbuild kit so I wouldn't have to do that.

I recently picked up a 2212/13 1000KV. How overpowered would it be on the front of the FT3D.

If that's this motor, it's going to be underpowered, not overpowered. Because I tried a little bigger (and much better quality) motor -- a Hyperion 2213-20, and the FT3D could barely hover, but not pull out of hover...and the speed was too slow to hold sustained knife-edge.

I think the "beef" power-package that the FT3D v2 video refers to is misleading...or at least confusing. See this link: http://www.lazertoyz.com/3D-Powerelectronics-pack-THE-BEEF_p_456.html . That page mentions two "Beef" motors: a "light" one and an "upgrade" one. Looking closely at the FT3D v2 video, you can see that the motor they have on the plane is the bigger (upgrade) one. The smaller one is about the size of the motor I tried first, which like I said was disappointing in performance. The FT3D needs some serious power.

My FT3D balances with a 2200 under the cockpit hatch. Or a 1600, or a 1000. The reason it worked out that way is because I put a heavy motor up front (an 87-gram motor). But this plane needs a big motor to be 3D-capable, so I guess they planned it that way when designing the length of the nose of the plane.

I did however have to relocate the skewer stick that secures the power-pod to the fuse to a more aft position, so it wouldn't be in the way of the battery in the tray.

Here's my FT-3D, made from the speedbuild kit. I'm using a Scorpion 3008-32 motor and a Thunderbird-36 ESC. Yes it's a big motor for such a small plane, but it's nice having that much power on this plane. The X-mount for the motor was a tad too big to fit within the standard power pod firewall, so I made another firewall with tab extensions at top-center and bottom-center to secure the top and bottom X-mount screws to. Then I had to cut a small notch in the top of the fuse to key the firewall extension into, so it would push all the way back.

Very nice ft 3d man nicely done and theres never anything wrong with having to much motor. Just means that much more fun

Question. Has anyone found a good set of carbon fiber landing gear for the FT3D? Where? Cost?

My kids want to get a set for me for Christmas, and not sure where to go...

My first 3d RC Plane

I finally finished this plane and had my 1st maiden yesterday. Wow, this plane flies great, but I'm not used to flying a 3D plane. Much more sensitive then anything I've flown.

The take off was a little shakey, but then I got it high enough to trim it out. I started out with 30% throws, and worked my way up to 100%. I can't believe how quickly it does aileron roles at 100%. This is something definitely new to me. It is going to take me a little bit to learn how to fly it well.

I had a friend at the flying field try it out. This friend is good at 3D so I wanted to see what he could do. He did a knife edge, and a couple other things and was impressed. He couldn't get it to hoover very well though. He noticed I had the motor mounted with a slight downward angle. He recommended repositioning it to be level. He felt this will enable hovering.

I used packing tape from Tape Brothers. It takes a while to apply, but I like the finish, the weight is minimal because the tape is very thin, and I feel it adds strength and helps the edges stay good.

first build ever let me know what you think !!!!!!!!!

Below is my first ever airplane/build as I am a new to the hobby (im all ears for comments hints you guys have for a nooby) and my buddies second FT3D build now. After some trouble getting the wing on the first time round I decided to use a lot more glue the 2nd time round to act as a lubricant because prior to completion i ran into a half way glued on wing and high frustration/stress levels..if it wasn't for the denatured alcohol I would have to rebuild from scratch...soo HUGE shout out to josh for telling us about that on your guys youtube channel !!!!! ...ive also got a tiny bit soldering to do with the esc and battery connector while i'm currently waiting patiently for arrival of my dx transmitter and receivers..then its time for the maiden flight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hurry up usps hope you all had a great christmas and have a great/safe holidays rsz_20141220_001733_-_copy.jpg rsz_20141220_001752.jpg rsz_220141220_001756.jpg rsz_220141220_001740.jpg

DUDE! You did a good job! I still have only painted one plane in my fleet. That tape really stiffens it up and might stay around much longer. What setup are you going to run on it?

With a little hot glue to repair to the wing and were back in the air the next day and funny thing is its the best its flown yet!!!

I know this is probably a stupid question, but what do the vortex generators on the wing to to the flight of this plane?
First of all, WELCOME TO THE FAMILY

Not a stupid question... In short, they keep air flow over the wings during a high alfa flight, reducing wing rocking or instability.
