FT Bloody Wonder - Scratch Build

There is a PDF on the Internet about how to choose a electric motor for a rc airplane.

There are two basic ways to size a motor........

Barrel diameter and length or stator diameter and thickness.

The 28-26 means the diameter is 28mm, and the 26 is how long the barrel is in MM

I have a exceed rocket motor that's 2215 and those are the actual stator measurements.

Since I started using the 9*5 prop my battery and ESC are now warm after a 12 minute flight at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. What have you all done to get airflow theough the powerpod?

I drilled two 1/4 inch holes in the firewall, which doesnt seem to be enough.

Here's my Bloody Wonder maiden flight.
I am using a 370 BL from an ARES Gamma Pro, an Electrifly 9x6 SF prop, and a 1300 mAh 3 cell. I was flying it in my back yard which is a little tight for a maiden. I need to get it out to a more open park where I can really open it and see what it can do. All in all, I am calling this one a successful maiden flight! My second landing did pop one of the vertical stabilizers loose. I added a couple bar-b-q skewers for reinforcement and they really didn't seem to affect the flight characteristics. The vertical take-off was a snap! Now I need to get some color on it so I can tell whether it's coming or going.

Where did you put the skewers? I've been looking but can't really see a good method to strengthen apart from cross bracing wires, like an old biplane!

Here's how I did it.

I am sure it has some effect, but not really enough that I notice. I am really not that great of a pilot so a little extra drag probably isn't a bad thing:black_eyed:

I also added some skewers on the bottoms to keep the foam alive a little longer.

I might add some landing gear, but I really like the ballistic roll rate, so I really don't want to add anything that will increase my polar moment of inertia:D

If you knock off a rear fin, don't worry too much about it. I flew mine a while like that until my wood pile ate the whole plane.

I did the same skid thing to mine, but also covered them with a strip of packing tape to make sure the didn't catch and rip off.
that's the kind of bracing I was thinking of, I might give it a go.
It's a really fun plane, on low rates it's stable and so easy, just flies where you point it, but up the rates and it flips and rolls brilliantly!
I've been using the Hextronik 24g but just built a second power pod with a park 450, twice the thrust apparently! 30Mph winds at the moment so no flying...

I'm having enough fun with my current setup I haven't put the hot rod power pod into this build yet. And Exceed Rocket 2215 1300kv swinging a 9*6 prop. With a 40a ESC

I need to put some down thrust into it first. In last plane all it wanted to do was climb.

I don't have any down thrust on mine and it does pretty well; WOT and it climbs, but not a lot of change from mid throttle down. This seems to be a plane that requires constant input, so I don't know if the climb/descend with throttle variation really bothers me. As long as I can trim the ailerons so it's not constantly trying to roll, the pitch doesn't seem to be an issue. It's pretty windy here today, but this thing cuts through it like crazy. I was going to fly my Super Cub today, but it's way too windy for that, but the B. Wonder is a hoot in the wind. Kind of wish I had a rudder for landing, but other than that, what a fun little plane. The reinforcement skewers seem to be working well. I get some tail wag at high speed, but I have not had a chance to fly this thing when it wasn't at least breezy and I think the tail wag is breeze related, since it did it with and without the skewers.

I've not tried mine in strong winds, not brave enough!
have found it super stable though, I can easily leave it hands off and just watch it keep the same path. It's easily the most predictable of the ones I've built so far.

edit: Had a terrible, windy, rainy morning. Then a lovely calm sunny evening! So I took the Bloody Wonder out. Tried a 808 16v2 camera on the wingtip. It didn't like that! New prop and tried again, camera on the back.
Flew just brilliantly, super straight, a little pull up on full power but nothing that major. Vertical flight, did an accidental hover on the prop at first, pulled out with ease. Did crazy barrel roll things to see what might happen. It just recovered when I let go, awesome airframe.
The Park 450 made a huge difference, can just chuck it around the sky now :D

Well, my old black and white finally took a hit it couldn't recover from. Rest in pieces friend. Took the replacement through its paces and it flies even better. I covered it completely in colored packing tape and upgraded to digital metal gears. Finally water resistant enough to not sweat grounding it in the morning. If I could have but one plane to fly, the Wonder would be it.

Where are your throws set? What motor/prop combo are you running? Mine is more of a dart and really doesn't float around like that. Mine gets really sloppy and unstable at slow speeds. You also appear to be a significantly better pilot than me...

On my new one I used the FT laser cut horns and have them at the furthest holes on the servos and the top holes on the horns, any closer to the surface and it gets twitchy. I keep it at 100% rates with 30% expo, I like the suppo 2208 1450 with a suppo 18 amp esc. I run it with a 8x4 exi prop and a 3s. I tried a few motors from a 2200kv to the NTM 2826 and found that it is much more fun to have that 1450 and flip it around a lot rather than blaze around the field. I work the throttle a lot to get the floaty effect. Hope something there helps.

Just tried some floaty stuff with mine, I think I can see where I might be able to make it do it. I really like the backwards spirals towards the ground. I have a 1250kV 370 with a GWS 8x4. The straight 8x4s are definitely not as fast. I think they must flatten out quite a bit at higher rpm. I put an APC 9x4.7 SF prop on it and was again REALLY fast! So fast, I managed to turn it into a lawn dart:eek:. Luckily just a little wrinkled foam. But now it's really broken in, so I'll get more bold with it:black_eyed: It really is a great plane. My only complaint is the weakness of the vertical stabilizers. It's probably silly, but it makes me want to build a SIG Wonder. I have an old OS .10 that would work great on a Wonder.

My only complaint is the weakness of the vertical stabilizers.

I glue an 1" by 2.5" piece of foam top and bottom to the fin and the plane, stiffens them up a lot and is well hidden in flight.

edit: I just realized I saw your maiden when you first posted it, looks pretty good. I remember thinking it must be nice to have a couple of plane fetchers.

Well, it's time for a new BW... Way too many unplanned landings!:black_eyed: I REALLY like this plane!! The plane fetchers are nice. I am trying to get the older of the boys interested in RC. I got him an ARES Gamma Pro for Christmas. I have had him on a buddy box a few times, but his attention span is still a little short.

Time to go to the cave and see if I have more foam board!!

I saw that video and it's quite intriguing... I am amazed at what the plane can do with rudders. For now, I am going to stick with bank and yank. I am having too much fun just like it is. Plus, she who must be obeyed (SWMBO), is watching my expenditures quite closely these days, so I think I'll just rebuild with the servos I had in it. I have my plans for the FT3D, so I'll just wait to build that to throw the rudder into the mix. I need to wait until she's not looking, and buy the bits to build the 3D with a 400 rather than the 370. I also really want to build an FT Cruiser. So many planes and so little money :(
