Many public libraries can 3D print anything if you provide them with the file(s). Maybe some of the guys you fly with have a 3D printer. Offer to buy them a roll of filament and the can print anyting without feeling put upon.
So knowing that my public library has one, you think I can just go ask them to print X file for me?

Just sent off the plans to be printed. $1.90 per sheet at Minuteman Press. They are a franchise outfit so if you don't have a source to get plans printed see if there is one close by. Having to manually print would have cost a bundle in ink prices alone.
Thanks for the tip, I just took the plans down to our local Minuteman Press and got them back in about an hour. Although it cost me $3.50 per page, ($28.00) it is still alot better than printing 96pages on the home printer and taping them together.

Our Public Library charges a minisule amount to print based on the weight of the product. Check their web site (may be under Maker Space or STEAM lab) and schedule an intro session. Take the stl files in and they can set you up.

Glad you got it done. Taping 96 pages together much less printing would have taken too much time & wasted too much ink.

I'm building my FT Simple Scout XL with removable wings

Guys, it may be better to make the wings removable from the top, (cut from the top down to the base of the wings.) It may give the fuselage better structural support. Of course I can't recut mine so I'm printing some 3d clips to hold the base together. Plus cutting from the top makes it easier to reattach all the wires. I try my configuration soon to see how it holds together before making another one.

FT Scout XL
Free Plans Now Available Here: FT Simple Scout XL 1.0

With permission from Flite Test, and the blessing of @wilmracer (Carl Lydick) and @willsonman (Joshua Orchard), I am scaling up the FT Simple Scout to a scale that should make it fit quite nicely into the 1:6th scale for the Flite Fest 2022 Dawn Patrol. I know that the Simple Scout is a fictional aircraft, but the point of this challenge is to include as many folks who want to fly in the Dawn Patrol as possible. For the Gotha Gaggle at Flite Fest 2016 we had 32 planes flying together. I'd like to see even more for the Flite Fest 2022 Dawn Patrol. To that point, the Scout XL is meant to be a easier point of entry to join in on the fun. Not everyone is up to the challenge of scratch building from balsa plans. Maybe you do not have that kind of time. With the Scout XL you can build a plane that looks the part or a WWI fighter, but with the ease you have known and come to love with building a Flite Test design. In fact, you can use the FT Simple Scout build video to build the Scout XL with very little deviation.

More Info on the FF'22 Dawn Patrol here:
https://forum.flitetest.com/index.php?threads/flite-fest-2022-community-challenge-–-wwi-“dawn-patrol”.69196/

The Scout XL has a wingspan of 58 inches and is approximately 155% scale of the FT Simple Scout. This size was chosen to fit the 1:6th scale requirement of other similar size WWI planes of the era, and also to accommodate the 20 x 30 inch foam board build medium.

The power requirements I am shooting for for the Scout XL are the Flite Test 2814-100 kv motor and 40 amp ESC (links below).

Motor: https://store.flitetest.com/ft-2814-1100kv-motor/
ESC: https://store.flitetest.com/40-amp-esc/

The plans are roughly 80% complete. I expect to have them released on or before February 20. @Mid7night (Ben Harber) has already built a beta version and should have a test flight in soon. I expect to start my build next week and @willsonman (Joshua Orchard) should be building a beta version as well. I will provide additional details in this thread as the build progresses.
hey is that a tuning fork beside your plane. planning on looking for water. Lol

I suppose it’s my flight experience along with my climate but my issue with pure foam board airplanes is that I find they just don’t last. You definitely get what you pay for. I don’t crash my aircraft often but I also find that repairs on balsa are not bad, you just have to dive in and do them. They just SEEM hard when you start.

Regardless, I had a look at the cup this afternoon. Clearly the nitromethane had evaporated and what was left was the oil. It was a syrupy mess in the cup but the foam was interesting. I forgot to grab a picture but I’ll grab one later. The stain from the fuel had clearly crept up and into the pores of the foam. I’d imagine that even if you did construct a nitro airplane, over time it would get so saturated with oil that eventually you’d have balance issues or a catastrophic failure of some sort due to the added mass somewhere. I’m not above trying to build one out but I’m not reckless and would never continue to fly the airplane because of that safety concern.
and this project is GO!! im going to be building one with a .46 engine. i am getting one for free, and i have everything else that i need... except fuel.....
anyway, i will be covering the nose in iron on film, and there will be internal ply and balsa structure, to hold the motor onto the plane. can't wait to get started :):).
i'll start up a thread for it, and post a link here:):)

Should the control horns be sized up at all or are the standard ones be sufficient for the XL's surfaces?

Started cutting and taping templates last night, still have three sheets left to tape together. going to do a removable wing I hope. also those ailerons are giants so maybe flaps and ailerons and possible mixing or maybe I will get lazy by the time its that far along.this thing is big, and I like it  will done @SP0NZ. Not sure what wheels I'll use because my ability to focus and string wheels is in question so wooden wheels with o-ring tires may be what happens, or just something I can buy.
