FT Scout XL : Flite Fest 2022 Dawn Patrol Challenge

As I am building the Scout XL, I made a couple 3D printed parts that I thought I would share.
First the Elevator support. This replaces the Popsicle stick on the elevator, plus adds the control horn. It can be printed flat in PLA or PETG with no supports. Be careful if you use hot glue with PLA so as not to melt and deform it as you are installing. It can probably also be installed with CA Glue.

I wanted my wing bottoms to look nicer, so I am using enclosed servo mounts on the wings.
This mount is made in 3 parts so that I didn't have to use supports when 3D printing.
The bottom plate is CA glued to the main body with the cut out hole lined up on the same side as the wire hole in the main body. (see pic attached.) You will need the bottom hole for this installation because the Main body fits nice and tight inside the spar, so the wire needs to go out the bottom hole and not the side hole, You will see if you decide to install this. You will also need 2 ea, small 2mm screws to attache the top servo cover plate.
I put these in before I fold the wing, then add the servos after the wing is slid into position, but they can easily be installed after the wing is done and installed.

Love all of this! BTW, there is an updated standard firewall that I posted a couple of days ago. Slotted holes for the 16mm x 19mm mount so you can mount the motor in any position you need.

You are tempting me to buy a 3D printer. But I have been hesitant because of the apparent steep learning curve.
But man, you are killing it. Thank you for the great contributions.

The Ender 3V2 is a great place to start, and probably one of the easier printers to get started with. There are tons of videos on youtube showing everything from full set up and tuning to upgrades and maintenance.
This printer stock out of the box will print pretty good, but if you want to improve the quality of your prints there are several upgrades you will need do that are not included in the initial purchase. Not sure if you have seen this thread but it has some good information.

If there is a Microcenter anywhere near you their pricing is a bit better than Amazon.

Thank you for the feedback and the links….I appreciate it. Not having any idea what I am talking about…$260 sounds like a cheap entry point for this hobby. I will spend some time checking this out.

If you're looking at an Ender 3 v2 then go to the Comgrow site, they sell refurbed units for about $185 with factory warrantee. I've had mine for a week and love it.

As mentioned previously, it’s printed and the design belongs to @SP0NZ and can be found on his Thingiverse page.

A little more time invested this afternoon on P2 (prototype #2). The British side just needed more tail work so I added the colors to match the airplanes of the era. The German side also got tail details. The cross of course, but the leading edge black was also added. The leading edge black on just the front wing was not bad but after I put from @wilmracer it pushed me to do the H-stab too. I don’t think there’s much more I’d like to do to this model. I need to fly it more and really play with what it’s capable of.

Willsonman, you have thrown down the gauntlet for interesting and fun renditions of the Simple Scout XL no question about that.
Should be a lot of fun seeing what comes from this example. Very imaginative, plus it is just fun to look at.

You're very kind. I'm just excited what others come up with as there are so many ideas that can come from this. Truly this will be a community effort.

That little box is such a cool idea. It's a bit much for Mighty Mini Series aircraft though.......

Agreed, it would probably add to much weight, plus these are made for the 9g servos. Even if I were to make them smaller to fit like 5g servos it might still add to much undesirable weight.
However, I have put these in several of the full size planes like the FT Duster, FT Bushwacker and FT Stick.

I'm planning to use these in my scout Xl build, which is currently in the cutting foam stage.

I'm also using a variation of Sponz's radial motor and firewall and control horns.

I plan to design wing spars to print on my Ender 5 Pro plus (might have to be multi part) and integrate in them some wing attachment scheme so I can make the wing removable without having to use rubber bands to retain it.

3d printers require less learning curve than you'd think and are well worth it. Be prepared to print a lot if stupid stuff though. You will...because you can. Once you learn a simple cad program (I use Tinkercad) you'll find you can do so many things.

I don't use power pods because first they just take up too much room, then I never really move them from one plane to another, so there is no reason to need them.. Having the 3D printer makes it easy to just design a firewall that fits on the front of the plane and gives me more room inside.
Like the ones I used on the Turbo Bushwacker the 137% Ft Duster and the Bloody Baron.

Didn't really realize how big this plane is when I started cutting, so now I am also looking at ways to have a removable wing also. I am thinking of having the top part of the fuselage above the wing come off so that the wing can sit down and be secured to maybe a 3D printed bracket below the wing, then have that top piece sit back down on the wing and attach with maybe magnets or skewers. Still considering different options.
When it is all said and done, I will probably just glue the wing on and hope it fits in my truck. :)

I'm working on a new faux radial design right now. Probably won't be done with it for a couple weeks yet though. I'm planning on making an XL version of that as well. I will post it when it's ready.
