FT Simple Scout - extended version

So I built the simple scout based on plans and threw a C pack motor in it with a 1300 3S battery. Due to the heavier motor and battery I had to move the servos all the way back in the fuse with them showing on the outside of the plane. The plane still flew well but I wanted to better accommodate the servos internally and reduce the boxy looking wing. I also use an FT power pod that is cutoff at the first set of tabs. It fit but only after notching out a bit of the wing.

Decided it was time to learn Inkscape and use it to modify the plans to share with all if it works out.

The goals:
- Elongate the fuse to move the servos further back and keep them inside the fuse
- Make the wing a little wider with a smooth airfoil
- Emphasize the scallops a bit more (personal preference as I think it looks better)
- Add a 1/4” to the nose to get my power pod to fit

Struggled through some tutorials and am getting the hang of it now. I ended up starting with the wing from the Bloody Baron and elongating it a bit as well as emphasizing th3 trailing edge scalloping. Also added a little over two inches to the rear of the fuse and extended the bottom fuse cover. Also emphasized the scallops on the the elevator and rudder.

Wing build started and went well. Really like the smooth airfoil. This was done by removing the paper from the double score cut out three inches and then pre-rolling using a large dowel. Servos are also recessed into the wing.

Question - dihedral? Tempted to go with a straight wing but looking for suggestions.

Nice,
I think dihedral will be not necessary if build with ailerons. I will build mine with no dihedral.

A little more progress today. Fuse went together same as normal with one additional piece of foam at the nose for the power pod bbq skewers. In the below you can see the airfoil and length differences.

Done! Weather was crappy today so maiden will have to wait until next weekend. Adding the extra length allowed me to keep the servos in the fuse. Balances perfectly with a 3s 1300 at the back of the power pod.

About 2” wider and 2.5” longer to help balance out a heavier motor/battery combo.

Landing gear added but in the old FT style with the foam notched and hot glue added. Put a piece of poster board on top to clean up the looks.

Smooth airfoil with 2” of dihedral and the servos buried in the wing.

Also added a tail wheel.

Your attention to detail is awesome. I really like the tail wheel setup. Can't wait to see a flight video. The larger scallops look the part as well.

Assuming this flies well, a bipe is next. Planning to shorten the wing width a little and borrow the wing supports from the baby blender. After that thinking about using the same wing, maybe wider, with fuse adjustments to make this an ugly stik.

Really like your complete extended version.

The scalloped wing and tail gives the plane real character, and the smooth airfoil . . . it just looks great! I also noticed the skewer reinforcement on the elevator, something I am/will put on the kit plane when I build it. Looking forward to seeing your maiden flight and also the extended plans. :)

Hey man great job.
Any chance you have some plans of the changes you made ?
I have it in my head to install mine with 2200 3s batteries so may need a bit more on wings but havent done my sums yet.

Bob A, Timmy P - thanks for the notes.

Gastel, hoping to maiden the extended version on Sunday. If everything is good I will post plans here. Just want to make sure as this was my first attempt with Inkscape.

Maiden success! Unbelievably smooth flyer. Not a rocket by any means even with a C Pack.

Post #2 updated with maiden video and updated plans.
