FT Simple Storch - BUILD

Something to keep in mind with the slow fly props: http://www.apcprop.com/v/html/rpm_limits.html APC says these are "safety limits"... I have seen a SF prop come apart running on a 3 cell battery and it looked like it exploded! Just something to keep in mind. I am not saying DON'T do it, but keep in mind that you have likely used up any safety factor associated with the design. Observe good prop safety if you are running a slow fly prop on a 3 cell battery, with even a 1000kV motor. For instance, an 11 inch slow flyer, the recommended RPM is just under 6000; a 10 inch is 6500 and a 9 inch is just over 7200 rpm. I am sorry, but it's the engineer in me that makes me do this... I have flown slow flyer props on 3 cells, but I make sure to stay well away from plane of the prop.

I say this because I have seen how dangerous a spinning propeller can be. I club member had his forearm cut all the way to the bone. He had a prop completely sever one of the muscles in his forearm!

Mine is almost done!

FT Storch 20140905.jpg

My first speed build kit. I will be buying more in the future.

Should have it finished and in the air this weekend.

I think the 3530 is only 315w on 4s... Either way it should work ok I assume. I also ordered up a 2836/8 1100kv I think will be more suitable but I figured it's a easy swap and I can try both

Finished my wing last night. The last part I did was to glue the center and hold it in place on the dihedral gauge. I then placed it in my garage with both wing tips on a two chairs to allow it to fully harden.. Well, the garage got hot, and now I have extra dihedral. I'm not looking to do any aggressive maneuvers, so I'm wondering how it will affect the planes characteristics? I'll be running flaps, and a 3530 1100kv motor on a 11 or 12" prop, so mostly slow flying but with enough power to fight through wind and pull the big plane verticle.

Maideded today. It flew great. It definately flies like a trainer. I can't believe how slow you and get this thing to crawl through the air. It takes off in inches. I really love how robust the landing gear is too.

Bloody Baron?

Your "Bloody Baron" looks great. I love the bloody wonder/fun bat. Is that that a "one off" modification or do you have plans. I have the storch on the bench but...:D
Thanks-

question about mixing elevator with aileron

i'm still pretty green and learning so I would like to know what exactly is meant by "mixing elevator with aileron". I have an idea what it means but just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. tia.

Just that.

Go into the radio's mix menu and for one of the unused mixes, set the aileron stick as the input and the rudder stick as the mix output, then assign it an amount -- like 50% (for 100% aileron throw, add 50% throw to whatever the rudder is already doing).

Specifics of "how" will depend on your radio, and it will take a little tweaking to get it how you like it. Start small and work your way up. The goal is to get it trimmed so you move the aileron stick to turn, then the ailerons *and* the rudder move the right amount for a good turn, following the directions from the stick (high-five check applies, as if you were moving both sticks at the same time).

As you get the hang of orientation and feel more comfortable, reduce this mix and start using both sticks for coordinated flight. Eventually you'll turn the mix off and you'll be flying full house :)

thanks dan, thought that was what was meant. I have a flysky 6 ch radio and the manual briefly describes using a " master" and " slave" channel set-up option, but I never really fooled with it. i'm still flying a 3 ch smash drone but i'd like to try something with ailerons and the storch looked like the way to go. was curious about the mixing option and might give it a try.

Glad you like it. It is a design that I have been working on for several months now. I took it to Flite Fest and got it signed by most of the Flite Test employees. Bixler loved it, and long story short, it is going to be the first community designed plane to get a speed build kit and be sold on the Flite Test store. The plans will be released for it for free, just like the Flite Test designed planes. Flite Test even had it in the background of the Storch build video. Josh Bixler also talked about it in pod cast #41 last week. I'm pretty excited about it.

Awesome news about the Bloody Baron. What size is the prop in your Storch?

Thanks Jaxx!

My Storch is powered by the Suppo BL-2717/7 1250kv motor with a 9x4.7 SF prop and a 2200mah 3S. It had more than enough power for me. Not quite unlimited vertical, but close.
