Isn't the airplane design so much it is the stable low speed characteristic and available thrust. Need to climb with twice the usual drag.

You want a long tow line so that small divergences in the towed plane position doesn't overcome the tow plane control system. Full size can steer the towplane through the towline, somewhat.
