My son and I are going to do a EDF, and after much debate the Viggen won out over the L-39 as our first jet. 😁
I found the "Powerfun" 50mm EDF on Amazon. They're out of the 4s model, but the 3s is available and produces a modest 770g of thrust.

All-up weight for rcr, 2 servos, battery, ESC and EDF comes to 220 grams.

If we size it to fit the smaller fan, would this work okay?

I don’t have any experience with edfs, but if it’s that light, I’m guessing it would work. But DO NOT take my word for it. I’m just purely guessing. Someone with more knowledge is going to have to back me up. (Or not)

Here's my attempt with the Viggen. Lots of spare parts on this one: 70mm EDF from my wrecked FT Me-262, recycled servos from an old Dynam Hurricane, and bits and pieces of leftover foamboard. Finished with whatever spray paint I had left in the garage and some homemade vinyl decals. Overall a quick and easy build- probably good, as this one may not live a long time. If I did it again, I'd add a long carbon fiber rod to the wing to prevent it from bending upward.

Flying it was a trip. Maidened like a rocket with a 4S 3000 battery. First thing I learned was that I needed to turn down the rates (60%) and turn up the expo (40%). I'm hopeful I'll pick up a few other tips and tricks before she becomes a lawn dart. What a great platform to learn the Ways of the EDF.

Saw a BUNCH of FT Viggens at FliteFest '24. With the release of the V2 kit, I managed to pick up a V2 kit at FF. Plan to add the step to my V1 since that is the biggest change from V1 to V2. Looks like it should be an EZ retrofit.

PS: I'd get my GOLD BADGE for one of the first 50 kits, but the FT APP has been broken as of late......

Is there anywhere I can find a full list of changes? What step are you referring to? I have a v1 I built several years ago but never flew, was thinking of pulling it out of storage

I'll pull the wing out of the V2 kit and put it next to my V1 wing. Would be super simple to retrofit the change to a v1 even if completed. The only change is the wing and the foam. My V1 kit predates the original brown waterproof-ish foamboard. The V2 kit has the latest white waterproof-ish foamboard.

Here is the V2 wing from the kit. it is cut from one piece of foam just like before.

The step wing is achieved by folding the two flaps over ar the front of the wing, and there are two pieces which will be glued on behind those, up to the hinge lines for the elevons.

It would not be hard to add four pieces to the existing V1 wing to achieve the exact same change.

This is my V1 wing. They did straighten out the leading edge a bit to make it an easy fold where the front triangles fold directly over on a straight line.
