FT What Did You Do RC Today : Caution Offtopic At All Times

I finally got my TT based flying wing into the air today!

No pics as photographer was not there and I did not take my GoPro because I was not even sure I could get it to fly.

Still too tail heavy but getting there. Also the nose wheel steering works well enough for take offs and landings.

Here is an old pic. Flying pic to follow in later post!

I've held off long enough

I always knew this day would come, trust and love, broken like my heart.
I've put off this post for a while, and now it is time.
Last weekend, I crashed my beloved Apprentice. Fear not, she is not broken, save for my trust.

It is not my fault, I flew far too high, yet the connection was lost and I was only able to control the plane for a brief moment before she soared over my head, throttle off thankfully, and hit one of the four poles dividing the quad and copter section of the field.

All poetry aside, the only damage is a cracked wing where the rubber bands go over the wing. Still, she crashed!

The reason why I've put this aside is I've been contemplating my plan of actions. I no longer can trust my "trusty" DX5e after two fatal accidents of the same cause. I looked towards continuing with Spektrum, yet the Taranis QX7 has been on my mind as well. I decided I will go with the Taranis, from what I've read it's really good, solid connection, tons of room to grow, and best of all, in my budget! :D I will purchase one when it get's back in stock on the FT Store, not only do I want to support Flite Test and how amazing a team they are, it will also come with Mode 2 ready so that saves me a hassle. I plan on switching my planes to Frsky as well.

Also......
I bought myself some foam board, hot glue gun, printed out some plans, got some electronics, and am ready to DIY!!!!
I decided I wouldn't go the serious investment route all of the pilots told me I would, and I'll just build amazing foam board planes!
I will be starting with the FT Versa Wing, my first wing, although I won't be able to fly it until I get the radio system.

Any advise? Thanks!!!!!!

Welcome to the DIY & OpenTX Taranis world! :)

If FliteTest is backordered for too long on the QX7, another good place to get it is http://www.alofthobbies.com - they are the North American service company for Taranis and are excellent to deal with (as well as being vendors at FT West)

Got to the field today to find a perfect 90 degree 10 knot crosswind. Put 1 flight on my FMS P-51 before calling it quits. On the bright side, this afternoon I installed my FPV setup in the Mustang. Ready to go shoot down some BF-109s!

Wake up! Time to fly!
I went out to brunch today with friends and then we hit a local flea maeket and the goodwill store on the way home. I spent a whopping four dollars and 36 cents to make my spotters helmet for FFE.

Just have to make a Fly angry logo stencil and paint that on and its ready to go. I was gonna grab a picture with my googles that have the angry eyes but I gave up after 4 sad attempts to grab the picture with them on hehe.

Thanks for the info, I'll think about ordering from them if Flite Test isn't in stock soon. :D

I finally got back out onto the slopes today. I haven't flown unpowered in what feels like ages, but it's such a nice change of pace.

I flew a Zupair Z1. It's the nicest, most relaxing glider I've ever flown. It handles light air as well as medium/bumpy air, and thermals well too.

This isn't my video, but it's a good showcase (by the designer!) of the Z1:

My RC day was spent mowing the runway at our field and flying my 3 channel "Tailless" Tiny Trainer

As Landed.jpg Centre.jpg Fly By1.jpg Other direction.jpg

It flies OK in fact but I am still working the perfect trim setup.

Sadly it was a typical cold winters day here. Only about 15 degrees, (Where did I put my snow shoes?:p).

Have fun!

Do you know the cause of the vertical landing?

YES! that was actually the 4th flight and i broke the motor mount on the third flight , the motor was pulling forward and down as the mount was only held at the bottom edge. the maiden crashes were a trim issue. I have to hand launch due to the grass here and just a little right or left rudder trim and the plane rolls downward and hand launching doesn't give you a lot of time to correct. so, mostly operator error. I've only been flying a few months.

Wake up! Time to fly!
Well.. I TRIED to fly today.....:(  ...

Walked up to the local park and sat in the pavilion to fly the Gremlin around some trees and the little covered deck and maybe around the baseball bleachers. Didn't do too bad for a cold start straight to FPV. Gave in and cranked the VTX to 200 mw..I am tired of range limitations on 25 mw with this thing. By the time you reach an obsticle the video breaks up. No damage other then a new nick in one of the props.

Packed it all back up to walk to the other side of the field where I fly the Alien and set up a new track layout I thought was cool. I don't know what was going on but before I had nearly finished my third pack I had already killed six props actually sheared off a blade on a Dal prop on the first battery.... Shoulda known then it was gonna be a Bills Law day. So that covers props.. Next I tried using a wooden fence section as a gate. I went around the flag I had used to mark the turn into that part of the track. Did a nice split S and stopped dead cold and dropped. Walked over and picked it up and saw the battery had shifted. I face planted it and pushed two cells back in nearly half an inch. Not wanting a fire in my hands I went to pull the power connectors apart and realized I did not have to worry as the positive wire was cut when the battery moved. To top it all off lets throw in an broken antenna.. Left the pit with four lobes came back with three and that was the end for me I didn't even fly my remaining two packs.

When I got home the icing on this huge messy cake of a day was seeing the two Caudron pieces I had primed before I left had bubbled, peeled and started dissolving in spots. Yes I did test pieces with a light coating on sanded water resistant paper as well as a non sanded section that had a good size area of exposed foam weeks ago now. Evidently the primer soaked thru the paper even though there was two dried coats already on the pieces. Sooo. I will be making tail feather AHHHHGAIN.

I tested the foam with both the primer AND the finish paints and no peeling has happened.. Don't understand why it did this today of all days.

Hope everyone elses day has gone better then that. Happy 4th of July.
